Highland uses Nauman’s 300 yards to grind down Freddies, 17-14Dane Nauman started where he left off last year on both sides of the ball, rushing for 300 yards and making 10 tackles in the season opener for Highland, leading the Scots to a 17-14 win over Fredericktown.Highland had a 14-6 lead after one quarter and led 17-6 at the half.
Northmor counts on seniors to continue winning ways

The Northmor football team outscored opponents in a 297-236 last season when they went 9-3 overall and 5-2 in KMAC play, and Coach Scott Armrose looks to build off a season that ended with a second-round playoff game to West Jefferson.

The Northmor softball team lost three key players to graduation, but the Golden Knights are returning nine letter winners led by All KMAC honorable mention Taylor Cantrell, who looks to lead the team to a successful season this spring. Their head coach is not shy in setting goals for the team to compete at a high level.

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 31st ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. Based on performances, we ask ADs, coaches and the community to nominate one boy and one girl from their athletic programs to compete against other schools’ nominations. This week we have two diamond stars who are run-production RBI machines for their school teams.

Golden Knights take to the road, upset Bulldogs, 52-46. On the road at Crestline on Feb. 2, Northmor took a first-quarter lead, and held on against a fourth quarter rally to defeat the host Bulldogs 52-46. The win evened the Golden Knights’ record at 9-9 (5-6 in KMAC), while the favored Bulldogs fell to 13-7 and 5-3 in Mid-Buckeye play.

Despite huge game by Payne, Trojans beat Danville by 23. Spencer Payne had a career night for Danville, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Devils to derail undefeated (in KMAC) Centerburg, Monday night. The Trojans countered with six players in double figures to dominate the Devils for a, 88-65 victory, Jan. 18. Centerburg improved to 12-1 on the season and 8-0 in KMAC and Danville fell to 4-10 and 2-8 in KMAC)

No. 2-ranked Lady Pirates continue to roll, 57-35 over Trojans. The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates are ranked No. 2 in the AP poll for Ohio Div. III schools, and they played like it, Wednesday night at Centerburg, with a 57-35 victory. The win was the 51st consecutive regular-season win and 65th-straight KMAC victory for Cardington-Lincoln, which is 13-0 this season and 9-0 in KMAC. Centerburg fell to 1-11 on the season and 0-8 in KMAC.

The Cardington-Lincoln girls basketball team continued its dominance with a 54-37 win over Mount Gilead on Dec. 22 to improve to 9-0 on the season. Getting douible-figures scoring from four players, C-L led from start to finish to keep this perfect season alive. The Lady Pirates led 15-10 lead one frame thanks to Kambry Edwards putting up five of her 12 points including a three pointer. After one half it was 32-16 Pirates, with Beth Hardwick hitting a pair of threes on her way to 10 total points. The Pirates went into the second half with confidence outscoring Mount Gilead 13-9, with Karsyn Edwards scoring five points. The final frame saw an Indians advantage of 11-9, but it was too little too late.

On Dec. 21 the Highland boys’ basketball team hosted the Galion Tigers and came home with a 66-61 victory. Highland was up 29-24 at the half thanks to some solid play by Dane Nauman, who scored seven of his 10 points in the quarter. On Dec. 22 the Marysville and Mount Vernon boys’ basketball teams squared off and it went all the way to double overtime for Marysville to walk away with a 61-59.

East Knox stays undefeated, outlasts Danville, 52- 47. The East Knox Bulldogs started slowly, then ramped up their offense higher each quarter to remain unbeaten and improve their record to 6-0, 5-0 in KMAC play, with a hard-fought 52-47 win over host Danville. The Tuesday night loss dropped the Blue Devils to 2-6 and 1-5 in KMAC.

Entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Northmor Lady Golden Knights basketball team, Freddie Beachy is expecting the team to improve on it’s 7-17 record last year.

Bulldogs slow Nauman, Scots, 31-3. The eighth-seeded Highland Fighting Scots were 9-2 and had outscored the opposition 337-199 entering the Division IV, region 15 semi-final against undefeated No.1-ranked Bloom-Carroll. Co-KMAC Player of the Year Dane Nauman was rushing at a clip of better than 10 yards per carry. Roughriders run roughshod over Northmor, 63-13. The No. 6-seeded Northmor Golden Knights hit the Division VI, Region 23 semifinals with a 9-2 record, having outscored their foes 284-173. But in the play-offs, there is always someone with better stats, as No.3 West Jefferson entered the game at 10-1, with a 420-132 points advantage. It didn’t take long to see where those stats came from.

Northmor dominates Bulldogs in power battle, 24-7. In a battle of KMAC power teams, the Northmor Golden Knights remained undefeated, 7-0 (4-0 KMAC) with a 24-7 victory over the visiting East Knox Bulldogs, 5-2 (2-1 KMAC). LeMaster leads Centerburg to 49-14 trouncing of Mt. Gilead. Sophomore running back-middle linebacker Caylan LeMaster scored four times and took control of the game early as the Centerburg Trojans improved to 4-2 (2-2 KMAC) with a convincing 49-14 victory over the visiting Mount Gilead Indians, 2-5 (0-4 KMAC).
