The Mount Vernon News sports department’s MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK is a weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools. Based on their performances, we will select an ATHLETE of the WEEK and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments.
The baseball and softball seasons missed a few games due to weather, but when the players got on the diamond, pitching ruled supreme and the top pitching performers also hit to fuel their teams to wins. Our Athletes of the Week are Stevie Asher (Highland softball) and Grant Bentley (Northmor baseball).
Female Athlete of the Week
Stevie Asher
Stevie Asher pitched and hit her way to a 10-0 win for Highland over Pleasant, April 4.
Asher’s 71-pitch masterpiece saw six strikeouts and one walk. At the dish, she knocked out three hits and drove across three runs. Her single in the first drove in the game’s first run.
Honorable mention goes to Northmor’s Maddie Simpson, who went 2-for-4, with three runs scored and five RBIs in an 18-1 win over Mount Gilead. Simpson smacked a double, a triple and drove in the game’s first run with a three-bagger. Savannah Wilt drove in six runs for Mount Gilead in their 24-1 rout over Mansfield Christian.
Male Athlete of the Week
Grant Bentley
Northmor’s Grant Bentley wasn’t perfect, but he was close to it, pitching and hitting the Golden Knights to a 2-0 win over Mount Gilead, April 4. Bentley pitched a no-hitter, walking one, hitting two batters and striking out five in seven innings, needing only 73 pitches. At the plate, Bentley drove in the game’s first run with a third-inning single.
