Pirates douse the Flames in 15-5 onslaught. The Cardington-Lincoln Pirates came with bats blazing on May 7 to scote three runs in the first and roll to a 15-5 victory over the Mansfield Christian Flames. The Pirates went up 8-0 after scoring five more runs in the third inning, but the Flames got on the board with a two run bottom half of the inning to make it an 8-2 game. The Pirates went to work in the top of the fourth with six runs to go up 14-2 but the Flames added a pair of runs of their own to make it a 14-4 game. Both teams scored in the fifth inning, which was the the final inning of the gam ass the mecry rule kicked in.
Hayden, McGill shine in 3200M at Mount Gilead Invitational

The Mount Gilead Invitational Track meet took place on May 7 with 17 schools including seven local teams battling it out. Standout athletes included Alex Hayden of Centerburg and Michaela McGill of Mount Gilead who each had lopsided victories in the 3200 meters.

Cardington-Lincoln scores 20 twice against Mount Gilead. The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates ran their season record to 19-1 and 12-0 in KMAC play with a 21-4 demolition of Mount Gilead (4-11, 0-10), May 4. It was the second time in three days that C-L put up 20 runs against Mount Gilead, having won 20-0 on May 2, when Genevieve Longsdorf pitched a five-inning perfect game.

Trojans come back to hand Freddies first KMAC loss, 6-4 In a battle of the top two teams in Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference baseball play, Centerburg handed previously undefeated (in conference) Fredericktown its first KMAC loss with a 6-4 decision, May 4. Finnell throws one-hitter, Jackets beat Minutemen, 4-0. Cash Finnell was lights out on the mound and the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets topped the Lexington Minutemen 4-0, May 4.

Let’s talk broadcaster bloopers. We all have our favorite sportscasters and those we can’t stand, and we can debate our liked and disliked sports broadcasters, but let’s focus on mistakes … big ones … the funny ones and horrendous ones. Botched calls are in the news thanks to the “hate-him-or-love-him” John Sterling, the radio voice of the New York Yankees. In the May 2 game between the Yankees and Blue Jays, the man was either not paying attention or mis-saw what he saw.

Freddies walk-off 6-5 win over PiratesA three-run ninth that ended with a walk-off game-winning single by Braden Sapp on a 2-2 pitch, seized victory from defeat April 28, in a 6-5 Fredericktown victory over Cardington-Lincoln.Cardington got all their runs in a five-run fourth that turned a 3-0 deficit into a 5-3 lead, an advantage they held into the final inning.Teegan Ruhl led off the seventh with a single, and Daichi Yamazaki followed with another base hit.

Mount Gilead scores 48 runs to sweep Tygers. Many teams don’t score 48 runs in a month. The Mount Gilead softball team did it in a single day, a doubleheader sweep over the Mansfield Tygers. The Indians had put only eight runs across the plate in their last four games. Sitting at 2-9 in the season, 2022 turned around with an epic onslaught, April 30, when the Indians destroyed Mansfield 15-4 and 32-6 … yes, 32 runs in a single game. They had an inning for the ages in game two, when they came knocking for 29 runs in the second inning.

Asher’s 3 homers, 10-run fifth propel Lady Scots to 21-13 win over Galion. Stevie Asher bombed out three home runs, and 10 was the number of the afternoon for the Highland Lady Scots, Wednesday as they powered up to a 21-13 football score victory over Galion. Highland scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 21-12 lead, and the win marked the 10th consecutive win by the Lady Scots to tie a school record originally set by the 2018 team.

Back-to-back fives lead Mount Gilead over Danville 12-5. Mount Gilead came back from an early 1-0 deficit and used back-to-back five-run innings to discharge the Danville Blue Devils, 12-5, April 17. Lemaster’s 2-hitter, Reynolds’ 4 RBIs lead Trojans over Knights, 12-0. Daniel Lemaster pitched a two-hit shut out and the Centerburg Trojans made their five hits count as they scored 12 runs to lance the Northmor’s Golden Knights, 12-0, April 27. Grayson Reynolds took care of the offense for Centerburg with three hits and four RBIs and the Trojans also reached base on six walks, five hit batters and four Golden Knight errors.

With the pandemic still lingering around it could serve to be a confusing time for people trying to evaluate whether a symptom is COVID-19 or allergies, and UnitedHealthcare of Ohio CMO Dr. Gary Grosel had some pointers for the public.

Highland improved its season mark to 6-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Fredericktown, 3-2 and 4-2 on April 23, to drop the Lady Freddies to 8-4. In the opener, Highland put a run in in the first, took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, only to have Fredericktown come back with two to tie the score. Highland scored the tie-breaker in the top of the seventh.

Lady Jackets score in bunches, sweep Whippets 17-2, 12-4 . The Mount Vernon Lady Yellow Jackets ran their season record to 11-2 and 6-0 in Ohio Cardinal Conference play with back-to-back wins over West Holmes, 17-2 and 12-4. Lady Scots score big in later innings to beat Harding 12-4 , Shelby 6-1. Highland’s Lady Scots seem to wake up their bats later in the game, as they scored three runs in the third and poured it on with two in the sixth and five in the seventh to down Marion Harding 12-4 on April 14, and they put four runs on the board in the fourth and two in the sixth to down Shelby, 6-1 on April 20

Mount Vernon takes a pair from West Holmes, 10-3, 2-0. The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets got the best of the West Holmes Knights, April 19-20 with back-to-back wins, 10-3 and 2-0.Centerburg scores 40 runs in two games in two blowouts. The Centerburg Trojans scored, scored and scored some more, running their record to 7-1 with a 26-3 assault on Eastmoor Academy, April 19 and a 14-4 rout of Mount Gilead, April 20.
