Bulldogs run up football score on Indians, 27-0

It was softball, but the final was football-scorey, as the East Knox Bulldogs rang up 27 runs to down Mount Gilead, 27-0, April 14.

The outcome was never in doubt after EK bombed out an 11-run first inning. After getting four more in the second, the Lady Bulldogs rolled out 12 runs in the third.

The first set the tone for the game. After Mount Gilead was sent down in order in the top of the first by starting pitcher Maddy Cotsamire, the Lady Bulldogs started their half inning with a walk, a dropped third strike, a walk and a grand slam by Shanda Melick. Three singles, a walk and an error all preceded EK’s first out of the game, and by that time, it was 6-0. Then a hit batter and a three-run double by Natalie Smith to make it 9-0, a single and a two-run double by Ava Stiltner, her second hit of the inning, made it an 11-0 rout.

East Knox got 20 hits from seven players, and many of the Bulldog hitters reached base in bunches. Stiltner went 5-for-5 with a double and four RBIs, Cotsamire backed up her pitching performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Melick went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBIs, Smith went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs, and Hannah McCoy rapped out two singles in five at-bats and drove in two. Schrote was the Indians’ only base runner, on a single.
