Mount Vernon takes a pair from West Holmes, 10-3, 2-0

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets got the best of the West Holmes Knights on April 19 and 20 with back-to-back wins, 10-3 and 2-0.

In the April 19 game, Jonny Askew rapped out five hits – four singles and a double – to lead a nine-hit Jackets attack. Mount Vernon took a 2-0 lead in the first, and it was 6-0 after two innings, with the Jackets never looking back.

Askew led off the game with a single and stole second. After a Caden Rowland walk and two outs that advanced the runners, Logan Trace looped a two-run single to left. In the second inning, a one-out error, a walk and a run-scoring double by Askew was followed by a two-run error, a double by Konner Daughriety and a run-scoring ground out by Cash Finnell to make it 6-0. 

Finnell pitched five innings without allowing an earned run, and Beau Bridges nailed down the win with two innings of one-run work.

On April 20, Rowland pitched seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out 11. The Jackets got only three hits but scored two runs in the fourth to seal the win. With one gone in the fourth, Daughriety reached on an error, Finnell singled, Trace singled, Beau Bridges sacrificed in two runs, and that was all of the fireworks.

Centerburg scores 40 runs in two games in two blowouts

The Centerburg Trojans scored, scored and scored some more, running their record to 7-1 with a 26-3 assault on Eastmoor Academy on April 19 and a 14-4 rout of Mount Gilead on April 20.

A seven-run first inning put the game away, but a 17-run fourth inning was an at-bat for the ages in the Centerburg demolition of the Eastmoor Warriors. Centerburg outhit Eastmoor 21-4, and the game was never in doubt.

Jesse Rings had four hits and drove in six runs to lead the Trojans’ assault. Hunter Parker had four hits, Caylan LeMaster had three hits and four RBIs, and Tyler Johnson banged out three hits to pace 11 Trojans who got hits, as all 14 Trojans in the lineup reached base and scored.

Five hits, a hit batter and two walks put seven runs on the board for Centerburg in the first. The historic 17-run fourth saw the Trojans enter with a 9-2 lead. Grayson Reynolds led off with a walk and stole second. LeMaster was hit by a pitch, and both stole a base. Jesse Rings singled to score two. Johnson, Parker and Gavin Collins singled. Griffin Collins drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Reese Scott singled. An error, an out and a triple by LeMaster made it 18-2. A single by Rings, singles by Johnson and Parker and an error made it 20-2. Griffin Collins singled and Scott was hit by a pitch. Daniel LeMaster singled in a run and with two outs, singles by Caylan LeMaster, Rings and Johnson finished off the onslaught.

On April 20, the Trojans led 3-2 after an inning and 7-2 after a four-run fourth. C-Burg put the game away with a seven-run fifth. Centerburg pitchers held the Indians to one hit, while connecting for 15 themselves.

Centerburg started things off in the first with singles by Dakota Baer, Jarred Rings and Dalton Hall for one run; a walk, a wild pitch, and a single by Reynolds plated two more. Mount Gilead came back with two in the bottom of the first on two walks, a fielder’s choice, a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Nick Garvey, another walk and a sacrifice by Cameron Vickers. The Trojans put the game in hand in the fourth on a single by Caylan LeMaster, an out, a fielder’s choice bunt by Parker in which both runners were safe, a run-scoring error, an RBI single by Jarred Rings, a run-scoring balk and a sacrifice bunt by Hall to drive in a run.

Reynolds went 4-for-4, Caylan LeMaster belted two triples, Baer scored three times and Hall drove in three runs to pace the Trojans. Tyler McKinney got the Indians’ only hit. Griffin Collins went all the way on the mound for Centerburg, allowing two unearned runs and striking out seven.

Pirates fight back to squeak out 7-6 win over Blue Devils

Danville took a 4-0 led in the first, but Cardington-Lincoln fought back with a run in the second, three in the third and three in the fourth to eke out a 7-6 win April 20.

The Blue Devils struck first on a lead-off single by Dustin Beckett, a single by Joey Mickley and another one-base knock by Kendall Carter that drove in Beckett. After a strikeout, Levi Lyons doubled in a run and Walker Weckesser singled. That hit and an error made it 4-0 Blue Devils. 

The Pirates got one back in the second on a walk to Kaiden Beach, a stolen base and a double by Eli Huffman. The Pirates tied it in the third with three runs on a hit batter, a run-scoring single by Merek McClure and singles by Beach and Brad West. Cardington took the lead for good in the fifth on two walks, a sacrifice fly by Dillon Minturn, a run-scoring single by Wyatt Wade, a single by McClure and an error to make it 7-4.

Danville outhit Cardington-Lincoln 12-11 and was led by Lyons with three hits and two RBIs. Walker Weckesser had two hits and two RBIs. Cardington got three hits from McClure and two from Wade.
