Golden Knights hold Danville to one hit in 13-1 romp
The Danville Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead after one inning but were held to one hit, and the Northmor Golden Knights scored five in the second and seven in the fifth and connected for eight hits to take a 13-1 decision April 15.
Danville did its only damage to take the lead in the first when Dustin Beckett reached base on a one-out walk, advanced to second on an error, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball. The Knights reacted with five runs in the second on a one-out single by Cooper Thomas, a walk to Drew Hammond, a fielder’s choice and a walk to Trevor Ramos to load the bases. Max Lower was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run, and Griffin Workman hit a misplayed fly ball to score two more. Grant Bentley singled to reload the bases, and Andrew Armrose doubled in two more runs.
Leading 6-1 in the fifth, Northmor struck for seven runs on a walk, a one-out single by Jack Sears and, with two outs, Marcus Cortez being hit by a pitch, a Blue Devils error, a one-run single by Bentley, another error, a run-scoring double by Garrett Corwin, an RBI-single by Caiden Martinez and another Danville error.
Northmor starter Bentley and reliever Sears had retired eight in a row when Danville’s Walker Weckesser broke up the no-hitter with a single to right, and he advanced to third with one out but was stranded as Sears struck out the next two Devils hitters.
Northmor is 4-2 overall and 2-2 in KMAC play, and Danville remained winless in the KMAC at 0-3, though it has won a nonconference game against Tree of Life.
Minnick slam, mound work lead Scots over Presidents, 13-2
Rider Minnick led the Scots on the mound and at the plate to lead Highland to a 13-2 win over Marion Harding, April 14.
Minnick pitched five innings, allowing only two hits, two unearned runs and one walk while striking out eight, and his two-out, one-run double in the fourth and his two-out grand slam in the fifth paved the way to the big win.
Highland outhit Marion Harding 9-2, with Minnick’s two extra-base hits and five runs driven in as the centerpiece of the attack. Eight Scots got one hit apiece, and Kort Sears and Jon Jensen each drove in two runs.
The win moved Highland to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in MOAC play.
Freddies score early to down Cambridge, 7-1
After a four-run second, Fredericktown coasted to a 7-1 win over Cambridge on April 16.
The Freddies took a 1-0 lead in the first on an error, a single by Kaid Carpenter and a run score when Carpenter was nailed trying to take an extra base. In the second, a leadoff double by Luke Bean, a pair of walks to load the bases, a run-scoring single by Trevor Jobes, a bases-loaded HBP to Brady Lester forcing in another run, and two more walks to put two more runners home, made it 5-0.
Jobes connected for three of the Freddies’ 10 hits, and he and Carpenter each drove in two runs. Korbin McGowan and Alex Selby combined on the mound to hold Cambridge to five hits and one run.
Trojans score in bunches to get past Pirates, 14-8
A tight game between the Trojans and Pirates was blown open with a five-run Trojan fourth, and each team put up a six-spot in the sixth as Centerburg did the most damage in the last four innings to outlast Cardington-Lincoln, 14-8, April 14.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead after one and led 2-1 entering the fifth. The Trojans scored five in the fifth then added six in the sixth to take a 12-2 lead, only to see Cardington-Lincoln come back for six in the bottom of the sixth to cut the gap to four. C-Berg added solo runs in the sixth and seventh to nail down the win.
Dakota Baer homered for Centerburg to lead off the sixth, making the game 13-8.
The Trojans were led by Baer and Grayson Reynolds, who each had three hits. Reynolds also drove in three runs, and Baer and Isiah Reynolds each scored three runs. Wyatt Wade led Cardington-Lincoln with three hits. Cardington outhit Centerburg 11-10. Centerburg improved to 4-1, 1-1 KMAC, and Cardington-Lincoln dropped to 2-5, 1-4 KMAC.
Eight-run fifth buzzes Jackets to 12-2 win over Madison
A big inning, two homers by Konnae Daughriety and four bombs by the Jackets led Mount Vernon to a 12-2 drubbing of the Madison Comprehensive Rams on April 14.
After a 3-2 first inning lead for Mount Vernon, the offenses settled down until the Jackets came to bat ahead 4-2 in the fifth.
Daughriety led off the Yellow Jackets’ fifth with a home run to center. After a walk and an error, Beau Bridges singled. A walk and a double by Owynn Gleason brought in two runners. Following the first out, Jonny Askew singled in a run and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Caden Rowland. Daughriety launched his second home run of the inning to center field and score Askew ahead of him to make the score 12-2.
Three Jackets connected for two hits and three runs driven in. Cash Finnell went 2-for-2 (with a homer) with three RBIs, Daughriety went 2-for-3 (two homers) with three RBIs, and Gleason was 2-for-3 (with a homer) with three RBIs. Askew drove in one on two hits.
Rowland got the win on the mound to improve to 3-0. He struck out five in 2 2/3 innings. Beau Bridges finished up with 1 2/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out two.
