Lady Scots take two close ones from Freddies
Highland improved its season mark to 6-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Fredericktown, 3-2 and 4-2, on April 23 to drop the Lady Freddies to 8-4.
In the opener, Highland put a run in in the first and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, only to have Fredericktown come back with two to tie the score. Highland scored the tie-breaker in the top of the seventh.
Fredericktown outhit Highland 11-10 but committed three errors, while the Lady Scots played errorless ball. The Lady Freddies got three hits each from Jess Montalvo and Miranda Payne, and Highland got three hits from Faith Geiger. Stevie Asher threw a 128-pitch complete game for the win, striking out 10 for Highland. Payne was the hard-luck losing pitcher, allowing two earned runs in an efficient 87-pitch outing.
In Game 2, Highland went ahead early and never trailed, scoring one in the first and two in the third before withstanding a two-run Freddies fifth that cut the led to 3-2. Highland tacked one more on in the seventh for the final 4-2 score.
Highland’s 14-hit attack was led Audrey Robinson’s three hits. Guinevere Jackson, Emma West and Asher each had two. The Freddies got nine hits and were led by Montalvo’s two hits and two RBIs. West went the distance on the mound, throwing 110 pitches to earn the win.
Lady Pirates pour it on to beat Blue Devils 11-1
The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates scored two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth and padded a 7-1 game with four runs in the seventh to down Danville, 11-1, April 21.
Dana Bertke and Riley Burchett each connected for three hits for C-L, as the Lady Pirates put together a 15-hit attack to go with five earned walks. Bertke slammed a home run, and Ari Simpson belted a double for Cardington. Kayleigh Ufferman and Simpson each had a pair of hits. Danville was held to four singles and four walks by Simpson, who pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run, and Genevieve Longsdorf, who pitched four shutout, one-hit innings.
Lady Jackets top Lakewood with walk-off homer, lose to North Ridgeville
In a doubleheader Saturday, Mount Vernon came from behind late with three home runs to beat Lakewood 8-7, winning on a walk-off home run. In the second game, North Ridgeville scored four in the second to take a 6-0 lead over Mount Vernon and held on to an 8-3 victory over the Lady Jackets to drop the team to a 12-3 record.
In the opener, Mount Vernon got a second-inning homer from Sydney Silvery and held a 2-1 lead into the fifth, when Lakewood took the lead with three runs. The Rangers expanded the lead to 6-2 with two more in the top of the sixth, but the Lady Jackets closed the gap to 6-5 with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. McKenzie Krownapple reached base on a third baseman’s error to start the inning. With two outs, Silvery homered to center, her second round-tripper of the game, to cut the lead to 6-4. Kiannah Harris followed with a line drive blast of her own to make it 6-5.
In the final inning, Lilly Erb singled to start things, and Emilee Myers sacrificed and reached on an error. Down 7-5, Mac Schlosser took a 3-0 pitch for a strike, then swung at a 3-1 pitch and homered to left for a walk-off 8-7 win. MV was outhit 11-7, with Silvery the only Lady Jacket to collect two hits. Silvery and Schlosser each drove in three runs.
In Game 2, the Lady Jackets were held to three hits. Emma Calkins homered and drove in two, and Addison Christopher drove in a run. Pitcher Rhyli Pope was victimized by six Lady Jacket errors and allowed only one earned run in the loss.
Lady Blue Devils take a pair from Lady Saints
The Tuscarawas Central Lady Saints were no match for the Danville Lady Pirates on Saturday, as Danville swept a doubleheader by putting up 29 runs. Danville ended on top 11-5 and 18-2.
In the first game, Danville scored five runs in the first, gave up a pair in the third and put in four in the fourth and two in the fifth to take an 11-2 lead.
A 13-hit attack was divided among six players with two hits each.
In Game 2, Danville was up 4-0 after one and 9-0 after two. A seven-run fourth put the finishing touches on the 16-run victory.
Danville scored 18 runs on only eight hits, 10 walks and three hit batters. Cami Newbold was the only Blue Devil with two hits, and she led the team with four RBIs. Alicia Humphrey drove in three. Humphrey and Addison Mickley pitched, striking out seven.
Danville is now 9-5 on the season.
