Mount Gilead scores 48 runs to sweep Tygers
Many teams don’t score 48 runs in a month. The Mount Gilead softball team did it in a single day, a doubleheader sweep over the Mansfield Tygers.
The Indians had put only eight runs across the plate in their last four games. Sitting at 2-9 in the season, 2022 turned around with an epic onslaught April 30, when the Indians destroyed Mansfield 15-4 and 32-6 … yes, 32 runs in a single game. They had an inning for the ages in Game 2, when they came knocking for 29 runs in the second inning.
In the opener, Mount Gilead scored four in the first inning on a walk, three singles and two errors, and it gave it back in the bottom of the first when Mansfield tied it 4-4, but that was the last time Mansfield runners would cross the plate. Mount Gilead got the four it gave up right back in the second on an error, an RBI double by Molly Murphy, a single by Rezah Benson, a one-out, one-run single by Briana Zeger, followed by an error and a wild pitch.
The Indians presaged what was to come with a six-run fifth to put the game away. A walk, four consecutive singles and a triple to center by Benson made it 14-4, and a sacrifice bunt scored the 15th run.
The Indians outhit the Tygers 12-6, led by Benson’s 4-for-4 and Molly Murphy’s 3-for-4 and four RBIs. Mary Kelty drove in three.
The second game started in a similar fashion to the first. The Indians scored three in the first on a walk, a error, two singles and a double by Zeger. Then they gave it all back and then some, when Mansfield countered with five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-3 lead. Then came the second inning …all 29 runs of it.
The inning started with a walk to Savannah Wilt. Lexi Staats was hit by a pitch, and Kierra Main hit behind the runners and grounded out to advance both Lady Indians. Murphy followed with a two-run double to tie the score 5-5. Benson singled to give the lead to mount Gilead, 6-5, and Kennah Bump singled to make it 7-5. Singles by Zeger, Kelty and Trinity Schrote made it 10-5, and Wilt was hit by a pitch. With two outs and the score still 10-5, Main walked and Murphy was hit by a pitch. An error put runners at the corners, and Bump tripled in two, followed by an RBI single by Zeger. Kelty was hit by a pitch, and two walks and another HBP loaded the bases for Main, who singled in a pair to make it 20-5. An error, a three-run double by Benson, an error and a single by Zeger advanced the score to 24-5. Two errors, two hit batters and a walk put the score at 28-5 with the bags full. Murphy tripled to left to clear the bases, and Benson singled in Murphy to put the score at 32-5.
Mount Gilead scored 32 runs on 16 hits, eight walks, seven hit batters and nine Tyger errors. Benson had her second four-hit game of the afternoon, Zeger had four hits, and Murphy connected for three and drove in five runs, second on the team to Benson’s seven RBIs.
