Blue Devils top Indians 3-2 with walk-off double in extras

Extra-inning heroics made the Blue Devils a poor host as they took one in their last at-bat from visiting Mount Gilead, winning 3-2 April 29.

Mount Gilead got on the board first with a run in the second. A two-out single by Graham Sherbourne brought in Paul Butterman with the first run.

Danville took its first lead at 2-1 with a pair in the third. A one-out ground out by Kendall Carter plated Danville’s first run, and a single by Wyatt Weckesser scored Joey Mickley, who had singled earlier.

The Indians came right back to tie with a single in the fourth. With one out, Jonny Martinez singled in the tying run.

Runners were on base in every inning to follow, but four scoreless innings brought the game to the ninth. Mount Gilead went down in order, and Danville came up with Dustin Beckett leading off with a single. With one out, Carter singled Beckett to third. Wyatt Weckesser won it with a double to center to bring home Beckett with the walk-off winner.

Danville outhit Mount Gilead, 12-6, with Beckett knocking out three hits and Weckesser, Mickley and Aaron Mezie getting two each. Martinez connected for a pair of hits for the Indians.

The Trojans came back with a walk to Dakota Baer, a stolen base and an error and a run-scoring single by Jared Rings. Singles by Grayson Reynolds and Dalton Hall loaded the bases, and a wild pitch brought in two runs to give Centerburg a 3-1 lead.

The game was iced in the third for Centerburg on a single by Grayson Reynolds, a run-scoring double by Hall, a single by Isiah Reynolds, a single by Jarred Rings, a walk to Caylan Lemaster and a two-run single by Reed Compton to make it 8-2.
