Depth, versatility, and big-meet performances propelled Mount Vernon to a successful outing at the Division II Region 5 meet, where the Yellow Jackets earned multiple trips to the OHSAA State Championships.

Sophomore Jamison Oakes led the boys squad with a breakthrough performance in the 400 meters. Oakes placed sixth in the regional final with a lifetime-best 50.05 after running 50.85 in the preliminaries, earning an at-large bid to the state meet. Senior Brady Mills also represented Mount Vernon in the event, placing ninth in the prelims with a time of 51.10 and narrowly missing a finals berth.

Freshman Calvin Heithaus secured the boys team's automatic state qualification by placing third in the 1600 meters in 4:16.21, breaking the school record in the process. Heithaus also competed in the 800 meters, finishing 12th in 2:02.98. Senior Gage Devaney added points and experience in the 1600, placing eighth overall in 4:26.68. Mount Vernon also qualified relay teams to the regional stage, with the 4x400 relay placing 14th in 3:29.53 and the 4x800 relay finishing 13th in 8:26.31.

The girls team matched the boys' success with a historic weekend highlighted by distance standout Lucy Rush. Rush captured the regional championship in the 3200 meters with a school-record time of 10:45.34, then returned to place fifth in the 1600 meters in 5:05.11, earning a second trip to Columbus and completing one of the finest distance doubles in school history.

Mount Vernon's field-event athletes also delivered. Khloe Bradley punched her ticket to state with a third-place finish in the shot put at 40-2.75, while Kennedy Howard cleared 12-0 in the pole vault to place second and secure a state berth.

The Yellow Jackets added one more qualifier on the track as the 4x400 relay team of Juliet Boyd, Cora Stetler, Nadia Nougi, and Kinsley Firebaugh raced to fifth place in 4:06.94, locking up the final state ticket of the meet.

The combination of experienced leaders and rising young talent gives the Yellow Jackets a strong foundation as they prepare to compete on Ohio's biggest high school track and field stage.

The OHSAA State Track and Field Championships are scheduled for June 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
