The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 28th ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. This week belongs to softball and baseball players. Two softball stars hit and pitched in stellar fashion and a baseball player blasted two homers in an inning get this week’s recognition. All of their exploits resulted in wins for their schools

Freddies hand Lady Devils first loss, 8-1. A seven-run second inning by Fredericktown’s softball squad, derailed Danville’s perfect 3-0 season as the Freddies handed the Lady Blue Devils an 8-1 loss. Lady Jackets recover from first loss, bomb Generals 15-0. Following a 5-0 spring break road trip to Florida, the Lady Jackets returned home jetlagged and sluggish and fell to Lincoln 10-0. The stung Yellow Jackets responded in a big way, the following day. Mount Vernon’s softball squad moved to 6-1 on the season with a thorough onslaught of the Wooster Generals, 15-0, April 5.
