Konner Daughriety has not only been consistent, but he has been above and beyond on the baseball diamond during his storied Yellow Jacket career. This spring he has been named Ohio Cardinal Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season.

Coach Nate Hunt led the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets baseball team to a 20-5 season, and his success at the helm led him to being named OCC Coach of the Year for 2024.

Local high schools were well represented at the track and field state finals over the weekend, with six athletes competing in their respective division’s meet.

Marissa Rutter’s outstanding track and field season will continue, as the senior Mount Vernon sprinter placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles to advance to the state championship meet.

The No. 5 Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets went down by four runs early and could never recover, as they were upset by the No. 13 Olentangy Liberty Patriots 5-3 in the District Semifinals of the Division 1 Central 4 baseball tournament on May 21.

The Mount Vernon girls’ track and field team was seventh out of 14 teams in the Division 1, Central District 1 meet, and six athletes advanced to regionals.

The Mount Vernon boys’ track and field team placed eighth out of 14 teams in the OHSAA Central District 1, Division 1 meet last week.

The No. 5 Mount Vernon baseball team had an opening round bye and beat No. 35 Logan 7-0 in the Division I, Central 4 Sectional Final on May 15, led by a masterful performance on the hill by senior ace Konner Daughriety.

Mount Vernon’s Marissa Rutter had a huge day a the Ohio Cardinal Conference track and field meet, winning the conference title in three events and a silver in another. She has had an incredible season and this time out gave her the Mount Vernon News Athlete of the Week Award for the second time.

Marissa Rutter was recognized for her dominance on the track by being named Ohio Cardinal Conference Runner of the Year, after earning 49 points in the OCC meet to lead the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets to a runner up finish.

These former Mount Vernon News area high school standouts will be in action in the week starting Mon May 13.

The Mount Vernon track and field teams both took first place at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on May 3, beating out Newark, East Knox and Utica in that respective order for both boys’ and girls’ events.

The Mount Vernon softball team improved to 18-7 on the year, and are riding a seven game winning streak after their 3-1 road win over Ohio Cardinal Conference rival Lexington on May 3.
