The skies over Mt. Vernon rumbled Wednesday evening, not due to weather conditions but because of the Yellow Jackets' powerful performance on the baseball diamond.

According to reports, with three home runs and a significant nine-run surge in the fifth inning, Mt. Vernon's Varsity Yellow Jackets defeated the Watkins Memorial Warriors 12-1. The game showcased both offensive prowess and defensive strength.

Brooke Dovenbarger initiated the rally with a two-run home run over the left field wall. Jocelyn Scarbury followed with a solo home run over center field. Gabby Beck contributed an RBI single, Carly Kennedy drove in two more runs with a base hit, and Hailey Rudrick capped off the inning with a three-run homer to center field. The crowd responded enthusiastically as Mt. Vernon secured a mercy-rule victory in five innings.

The Yellow Jackets first scored in the second inning, taking advantage of a defensive error by Watkins Memorial. In the third inning, Scarbury doubled down the right-field line before another error allowed a second run to score, extending their lead.

Scarbury also excelled as a pitcher, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over five innings while striking out three and walking three batters.

By game's end, Mt. Vernon accumulated 12 hits, including multiple hits from Scarbury, Kennedy, and Rudrick. Rudrick led with three RBIs, going 2-for-4 at bat.

Defensively, Mt. Vernon was efficient, executing two double plays and demonstrating discipline that complemented their offensive efforts.

Kyliee Trouten managed Watkins Memorial's only hit as they struggled against Mt. Vernon's dominant performance.

For Mt. Vernon, this victory was more than just another win; it was an emphatic statement of their capabilities on the field.
