The American Heritage Park will be home to the new "Let Freedom Ring Blue Star Family Bell Circle," a symbol of honoring Blue Star Families.

The City of Mount Vernon invites the community to celebrate its dedication on Thursday, July 2. The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. at the American Heritage Park behind the historic CA&C Depot. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be highlighted by the ceremonial first playing of the bells. It will also feature remarks from local leaders and musical performances.

The monument pays tribute to Blue Star Families—those with immediate family members currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, underscoring the shared sacrifices made both on the front lines and at home.

"While the Blue Star symbol traditionally honors active-duty service members, this installation specifically highlights the sacrifices made by the loved ones who support them at home," according to the City's press release.

The bell circle itself is an interactive experience. Featuring 41 uniquely tuned bells arranged in a circle, the installation allows participants to walk around and strike the bells, producing the melody of “My Country ’Tis of Thee.”

Tom Kaufman, a Michigan-based artist, handcrafted the bells from recycled welding and oxygen tanks. Each tank was cut, tuned, welded, and mounted to a circular steel structure before being powder-coated. The result is a striking public art piece that blends craftsmanship with patriotism.

Earlier this month, the City announced a major milestone in the project: the decorative rock centerpiece that will hold a permanent plaque has officially been placed at American Heritage Park next to the CA&C Depot. The installation was made possible with the help of Mack Industries, Inc.

“Every great melody needs a strong foundation, and this rock is ready to anchor music, memories, and recognition of our Blue Star Families,” the City noted in its update.

The City encourages residents and visitors to attend and ring in this new addition to American Heritage Park. Whether honoring a loved one in service, admiring the artistry, or simply experiencing the music firsthand, the dedication promises to be a meaningful community event. With the voices of leaders, the resonance of bells, and the presence of families, Mount Vernon will mark July 2 as a day of unity and remembrance.
