Interim City Engineer Quentin Platt told the Mount Vernon City Council during its July 13 committee meetings that most 2026 street resurfacing projects have been moved to 2027 because of other construction projects, though they hope to make some repairs to Edgewood Road this year
"But this year, one thing that we would like to do, we think that Edgewood Road, in particular on the east side is in need of some pretty immediate repairs. There's a lot of relief cracking and just really bad wear, and we're having struggles with edge retention there. So what we've kind of conjured up is we think for $79,000-ish, under 80,000, so we can do it as a no-bid contract," Platt said, according to a video recording of the meeting. According to the video recording, Platt said they can get a seven-foot wide mill and fill on the east side of Edgewood Road from Gambier to Chestnut Street; he said some spot full-depth pavement repairs would be made along with the mill and fill work. Platt said they are struggling to get the work done this year to prevent additional damage from freeze-thaw over the winter. They are waiting on a proposal form from a contractor in hopes that the company can fit it in this year. Platt said he made a full presentation to the Ohio Department of Transportation in an application for a $1.6 million Small City Grant to fund improvements on federal aid routes, which includes Edgewood Road, parts of Mount Vernon Avenue, South Division Street and West Chestnut Street.
Platt said the Edgewood Road project isn't a super long project, but if the city was to do a full width repair and resurfacing, they wouldn't be able to fit it in this year. The plan is to do part of the road this year and come back next year. At that time they will mill off new pavement to make sure they have a clean surface over the top of the road with a single joint in the middle.
Platt detailed recent paving projects: "many of which have been completed in 2026. The Gay Street parking lot, Spice Alley, and Venture Drive were completed with full-depth replacement, with Venture Drive also getting curb and gutter work. Vernonview, Teryl, Highland, Northridge, Clearview, and Oakway Drive had mill and fill work completed, as did East Chestnut Street and Martinsburg Road. West Burgess Street and Greenwood Avenue are under contract for full-depth replacement." The estimated cost was $1.9 million.
Projects expected in 2027 that are currently in design include mill and fill for Mansfield Avenue from Belmont to city limits; Nash Street from Mulberry to Mansfield; Taylor Road from Decatur/Nuce to Wooster Road; Emmet Drive from Nuce to Northgate; Decatur Drive from Nuce to Marcia; Marcia Drive from Decatur to its dead end; Yauger Road from Vernonview to Upper Gilchrist is also planned for mill and fill with curb and gutter work. Platt said, these projects would help address infrastructure needs after other construction concludes. The estimated cost for these upcoming projects is $3.57 million.
