Kennedy Howard takes 4th at state with a record 12’4” vault | MVHS JJ

Mount Vernon's Kennedy Howard concluded an impressive season with a fourth-place finish in the Division I girls pole vault at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet. The event took place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

According to Mount Vernon head coach Kathy Thayer, Howard cleared 12 feet, 4 inches, breaking her own school record and setting a new outdoor personal best. Her performance earned her All-Ohio recognition and established her as one of the top vaulters in the state. Earlier this season, she became the first athlete in program history to clear 12 feet, and her success at the state level further elevated her standing.

"Clearing 12-4 on her first attempt was key in her strong finish," said Thayer. "It was a well-rounded group of athletes, and Kennedy handled a few early misses with composure. Eleven vaulters cleared 12-0, so we knew 12-4 would make the podium. She almost cleared 12-8. I can’t wait to see what she achieves next season."

In addition to her athletic achievements, Howard was named an Academic All-Ohio Athlete, maintaining a 3.92 unweighted GPA.

Track and field remained a Division I sport this spring but will be restructured into five divisions beginning next season.
