The City of Mount Vernon announced on May 26 the swearing-in and promotion of several members within the Mount Vernon Police Department and Fire Department. These changes are intended to support the city’s emergency response capabilities and leadership.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department promoted Nate Hines to Assistant Chief. Hines, who has been with the department since 2006, previously served as a Firefighter/Paramedic and most recently as EMS Coordinator/Lieutenant. Tom Calland was promoted to EMS Coordinator/Lieutenant after joining the department in 2017 as a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic. The department also appointed Nathaniel Wolfe and Luke Hawbaker as full-time firefighters; both had previously served in part-time roles.

The Mount Vernon Police Department welcomed Joshua "Caleb" Craft as a new patrol officer. Craft brings experience from his previous service in Columbus and Newark since 2018.

"Our first responders are critical to this community," Mayor Matthew T. Starr said. "Whether it is through the promotion of long-term leaders or welcoming experienced officers, these appointments ensure that Mount Vernon remains a safe and secure place to live and work."

The city encouraged residents to congratulate those appointed or promoted for their dedication to public safety.
