Mount Vernon Boys Tennis looks to build on growth after competitive 2025 season

The Mount Vernon High School boys tennis team concluded the 2025 season with a record of six wins and seven losses, narrowly missing an even split between victories and defeats.

Coach Steve Tier reflected on the season's challenges and growth opportunities. "We missed some chances to add wins this spring, especially after six dual matches and the cancellation of our own invitational due to rain," he said.

Despite these setbacks, Tier praised the team's camaraderie. According to Tier, "Our biggest strength was the support players gave one another, whether varsity watching junior varsity or vice versa." Looking ahead, he identified areas for improvement: "We need to learn how to play against opponents who rely on consistent, low-pace shots. Our players must work on movement, strategy, and volleying to close out points."

Senior Ethan Foley was honored as the Most Improved Player for his remarkable development over four years. Tier noted that "Ethan transformed from an uncertain player to a leader that younger teammates look up to." Foley's dedication also led to his acceptance at The Ohio State University’s Newark campus.

Team culture remained a priority throughout the season. Tier added that "communication and respect are core to our program. Opponents’ families and community members consistently praise our players for their competitiveness and sportsmanship." For next season, the team aims to improve footwork and adaptability on the court. Facilities-wise, Tier shared plans to acquire a cutting-edge tennis simulator through a generous donation — if a suitable space can be found at the school.

With a solid foundation and focus on growth, the Mount Vernon boys tennis program is set to continue its tradition of competitive play and strong sportsmanship.
