Brooke Dovenbarger led the Mt. Vernon Varsity Yellow Jackets to a decisive 17-0 victory over Zanesville on Friday, driving in five runs on two hits.
According to the game report, Dovenbarger doubled in the first inning, bringing home three runs, and later added a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. Mt. Vernon established an early lead in the bottom of the first inning by scoring six runs. Dovenbarger's double scored three, followed by singles from Meredith Jones, Addison Davis, and Carly Kennedy, along with a double from Rylee Myers, each contributing to the score.
The Yellow Jackets maintained their offensive momentum with six more runs on three hits in the second inning. Jones singled in a run, Kailey Clayton drew a walk to bring home another run, and Myers and Kennedy each contributed RBIs. A single from Presli Pope extended the lead to 14-0 in the third inning. Three additional runs were scored in the fourth inning, highlighted by Kennedy’s single and Dovenbarger’s home run.
Grace Bates started on the mound for Mt. Vernon, allowing no hits or runs over two innings while striking out five and walking one batter. Zanesville’s starter gave up 11 hits and 13 runs (12 earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking three batters. Relief pitchers Miranda Oswalt and Allydia Bell effectively shut down Zanesville's offense for the remainder of the game.
Mt. Vernon accumulated a total of 14 hits during the game, led by Kennedy’s perfect 4-for-4 performance at bat. Jones and Myers also had multiple hits as part of a team effort that included drawing eight walks without committing any errors. Addi Smith anchored Mt. Vernon's defense with 12 plays.
Zanesville's sole multiple-hit contributor was player No. 12, who went 1-for-2 at bat.
