Fredericktown seeks 4th straight KMAC baseball title

The Fredericktown baseball team has a lot to live up to this spring, coming off a season in which the Freddies took home a district title and finished with a 24-win season. They also tied for first in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC), going 13-1. The 2021 Freddies' season ended with a tough 3-2 loss to Barnesville in the regional semifinal of the Division III tournament.

Daniels has career game as Freddies top Warriors 53-27. Gabby Daniels scored career-high 29 points and Fredericktown broke the game open in the third quarter to beat Ontario by 26 points on MLK Day, 53-27. Fredericktown, now 10-6 on the season (5-4 in KMAC play), rebounded from a 6-point loss to Northmor last weekend, with a thorough throttling of the Warriors (3-12 and 1-7 in Mid-Ohio play).

Despite huge game by Payne, Trojans beat Danville by 23. Spencer Payne had a career night for Danville, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Devils to derail undefeated (in KMAC) Centerburg, Monday night. The Trojans countered with six players in double figures to dominate the Devils for a, 88-65 victory, Jan. 18. Centerburg improved to 12-1 on the season and 8-0 in KMAC and Danville fell to 4-10 and 2-8 in KMAC)

Mount Vernon wins a pair on the road over West Holmes and Olentangy Berlin. Mount Vernon’s boys basketball teams won two games on back-to-back nights on the road, to run their record to 8-7 (4-2 Ohio Cardinal Conference). On Jan. 14, the Yellow Jackets topped West Holmes, 56-54 and the next evening, the Jackets got the better of Olentangy Berlin, 60-43

Trojans remain unbeaten in KMAC with 71-32 romp over Pirates. Centerburg improved to 11-1 and remained unbeaten in KMAC play at 7-0, with a thorough 39-point shellacking of Cardington-Lincoln (3-10, 1-7 KMAC), 71-32, Tuesday night at home. Controlling the action and shooting well, Centerburg hit 18 field goals and eight threes, to six and six for Cardington. Protecting the ball well, Centerburg turned the ball over only three times, to 10 for C-L.

Cardington-Lincoln rolls on with 73-48 win over East Knox. The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates victory train continues as C-L romped over East Knox, 73-48 on Jan. 8. The 25-point victory added to the Lady Pirates win streaks, which now sit at 12-0 this season and 8-0 in KMAC play, and run the C-L locomotive to 50 consecutive regular-season wins and 64 straight victories in KMAC.

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 17th ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. For the second week in a row, we had outstanding performances on the mats and the hard court, but this time the roles were reversed, with a female wrestler and a male hoops star taking the spotlight.

Cardington-Lincoln barely keeps streaks alive with 56-53 win at Northmor.The Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates entered play Wednesday night at Northmor, with a 10-0 season record, 48 straight regular season wins, 62 KMAC wins in a row and a No. 3 ranking in the current AP Division III poll. The dream season almost came crashing down, as a tough Northmor team kept plugging away before C-L prevailed, 56-53 to keep its streaks alive.

Freddies rally in second half to down Bulldogs 57- 42. Trailing at half-time, Fredericktown (6-2, 3-1 KMAC) took command in the second half, and defeated East Knox (3-4, 2-3 KMAC) in a girls basketball game, 57-42, Wednesday night at East Knox.

Mount Gilead rebounds from scoreless first to down Centerburg, 35- 21. Mount Gilead (3-2, 1-2 KMAC) was held scoreless in the first quarter but won their first KMAC game of the season, beating Centerburg (1-5, 0-3 KMAC), 35-21. It was as much as scoring hardship as it may have appeared, as Centerburg only put up two points on two free throws by Chloe Goulter, to lead 2-0 after the first.
