Despite huge game by Payne, Trojans beat Danville by 23
Spencer Payne had a career night for Danville, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Devils to derail undefeated (in KMAC) Centerburg on Monday night.
The Trojans countered with six players in double figures to dominate the Devils for an 88-65 victory. Centerburg improved to 12-1 on the season and 8-0 in KMAC play, and Danville fell to 4-10 and 2-8 in the KMAC
Centerburg started like the team it is, one that has outscored its opponents by 260 points so far this season. The Trojans put up 20 in the first to take an 11-point lead. They got balanced scoring from five players without the benefit of a free throw. Danville started slowly with only nine points in the first. Payne put in four points, Wyatt Weckesser hit for three and Max Payne added two.
The Trojans added 24 points in the second to increase their lead to 21 points at halftime. Mckinnon Mead led the assault with 12 points, and again, Centerburg got scoring contributions from five players. The Blue Devils also stepped it up with 14 points in the second as Spencer Payne and Walker Weckesser each scored five.
Payne went to work in the third and nailed two threes and two deuces for 10 of Danville’s 18 points. But Centerburg continued the onslaught and lit up the nets for 27 points to take a 71-42 lead into the fourth. Among seven Centerburg scorers, Colton Martin led the way in the quarter with 11 points, and Levi Houck scored six.
While the game was not in doubt, Danville kept fighting and put 24 points on the board in the fourth. Payne added eight more on two threes and a two, and Max Payne and Darren Mickley each scored five. Centerburg took their foot off the gas but still put up 18, with Grayson Reynolds getting six and Mead, five among five scorers.
Nine Trojans were in on the scoring, with five of them in double figures. Mead was the top scorer with 22, Martin had 17, Houck scored 13, Reynolds hot for 12 and Landon Griffith added 11. Alex Johnson just missed double figures with nine. Of seven Danville scorers, Spencer Payne finished with a game-high 27 points, Max Payne scored 11 and Cam Miller had 11.
Northmor leads from start to finish and tops Mount Gilead by 25
Northmor took a big lead in the first and built on it every quarter thereafter, as the Golden Knights dominated the Mount Gilead Indians, 69-44, on Tuesday night at Northmor.
Max Lower’s six in the first led five Knights on the score sheet. Carter Kennon’s three highlighted a five-point Mount Gilead first.
The Indians came alive with 14 points in the second, as Kennon hit another three and five points and Paul Butterman sank three twos and scored seven. But the Golden Knights countered with 17 points to take a 33-19 lead at halftime. Northmor saw five players put points on the board in the second, with Graesin Cass draining two from 3-point range.
Seventeen more point by Northmor, expanded the lead to 20 points at 50-30 after three. Again, the Golden Knights had five players in the scorebook and were led Grant Bentley with six. Kennon’s third three and four each by Butterman and Elijah Chafin put 11 on the board for Mount Gilead in the third.
In the fourth, Chafin did his best to bring Mount Gilead back, but his nine points of the Indian’s 14 were not enough. Northmor added 19 to its total to win by 25, and Logan Mariotti led the effort with eight points in the quarter.
Northmor had seven scorers in the game, four of whom were in double figures: Bentley 16, Mariotti 16, Lower 15 and Cass 10. Caleb Schnuerer got close and added eight.
The Indians had three players in double figures but got scoring contributions from only four players. Mount Gilead was paced by Chafin’s 15, Butterman’s 13 and Kennon’s 13.
The win puts Northmor over .500 on the season at 8-7 and evens its KMAC record at 5-5. Mount Gilead drops to 6-8 and 4-5 in the KMAC.
Yellow Jackets win tight one over Tygers, 62-57
Mount Vernon won its fourth-straight game and improved to 9-7 and 5-2 in Ohio Cardinal Conference competition with a 62-57 win over the host Mansfield Tygers (4-9, 2-5 OCC).
The Tygers played tougher than their record and gave the Jackets a battle all game long. Mount Vernon got scoring contributions from six players, and nine different Mansfield players entered the scorebook in a seesaw battle that the Jackets led at the end of each quarter.
Mount Vernon took a 17-13 lead after one and extended the lead with a 19-14 second quarter to own a 36-27 lead at the half.
The Tygers battled back and won the third and fourth quarters but came up short. The Tygers outscored the Jackets 17-15 in the third to cut the Jackets’ lead to 51-44 going into the fourth. A 13-11 Tygers advantage in the fourth could not overtake Mount Vernon, who went home with the five-point win. Maurice Ware was the only Tyger in double figures and paced them with 22 points. The Jackets finished with three players in double figures: Caden Rowland with 20, Nolan Belcher with 15 and Beau Bridges with 13. Trevor Buttke nearly made it to doubles with nine points.
Freddies keep winning, end Bulldogs' win streak with 51-44 victory
The Fredericktown Freddies took a first-half lead and withstood a second-half challenge by East Knox to win their sixth in a row and end the Bulldogs’ four-game winning streak with a 51-44 win Wednesday night.
In the first, Fredericktown doubled up on EK, 14-7, led by four field goals from Kaid Carpenter, while the ‘Dogs got a three from Peyton Lester. In the second, Fredericktown put another 14 on the board, and EK scored 12, to make it 28-19 Freddies at the half. Carpenter had 11 at the half to lead Fredericktown, and Shane Knepp led EK with seven points at halftime.
The Bulldogs came out firing in the third with 15 points to cut the Freddies’ lead to four at 38-34. Dillon Moreland sank two threes and a pair of twos for 10 points to fuel the East Knox run, and the Freddies put up only 10 themselves.
In the fourth, Fredericktown regrouped and extended the lead by three, though Lester netted his third three of the game for EK. Teegan Ruhl kept his team ahead with three deuces in the fourth.
Fredericktown’s top scorers were Carpenter with 20 and Ruhl with 13. East Knox was led by Moreland with 14, Knepp with 13 and Lester with 11.
The Freddies’ win moves them to 8-7 on the season and 5-5 in KMAC play. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 11-4 and 8-2 in KMAC.
