Teams from 14 schools ran, jumped and threw at the Fredericktown Invitational on April 28 and the visiting Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets won both divisions, taking home the most gold. East Knox Bulldog runner Nathan Streby was a two-time winner, as was Fredericktown track and field leader Elsa Hoam.

Fredericktown’s prestigious list of current student-athletes who have signed formal commitments to further their athletic and academic careers in college continues, as track-and-field athlete Sydney Wilson will move on after her Freddies’ track days to run and vault for the Division 2 Minot State University Beavers in Minot, North Dakota.

With baseball, softball and track events filling up the calendar, this week, two athletes get their due, and both are past winners for their skills on several fields of battle. Our Athletes of the Week are Ella Bouton (Fredericktown track) and Grant Bentley (Northmor baseball).

On Feb. 2, at Fredericktown High School, Freddies track star Ashley Cockrell formally signed to continue her academic and track careers at Ashland University (AU).

Fredericktown football Coach Will Hartley has hopes of contending for a conference championship with a huge amount of experience this season, with the Freddies returning 14 seniors that include up to three starters.

Replacing eight graduating seniors from a strong 2021-2022 season in which the Fredericktown volleyball squad went 20-5 and 9-3 (third-place finish) in KMAC play, making a run to the district semifinals, is an issue the Freddies’ new head volleyball coach Cassandra Vaughn has addressed head on.

Golfing is best played under sunny skies with moderate temperature and wind, and those conditions were met, as 140 participants teed off at the 20th Annual Fredericktown-Willie Davis Youth Football Golf outing, Saturday, July 9, at the Chapel Hill Golf Course.

The Fredericktown High School Alumni Association is pleased to announce the Morris and Sue James and Family Scholarship that will recognize the distinguished careers of Morris and Sue James as educators at the Fredericktown and Highland/Marengo schools. Their fully endowed scholarship will first be awarded to a 2023 FHS graduate.

Fredericktown Local Schools will induct six new members to its Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor May 6, Chris Well, one of the organizers told the Mount Vernon News.
