Let's Talk Sports Some REAL Winter Games to see

Let’s Talk Winter Olympics. The next major sports event coming up is not the Super Bowl and not March Madness. It is the Winter Olympics. Beijing 2022 will host the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, Feb. 4-20. Sometimes thought of as “the Summer Olympics’ little brother or sister,” to those of us who prefer cold-weather sports or who applaud and embrace the athleticism on skates or skis, the artistry of dancers and gymnasts on ice, the elegance of skating in pairs, the speed of skaters, the excitement of downhill, the precision of bobsled (OK, they call it “bobsleigh”) steering and the fierce national competition in the hockey arena, the Winter Olympics stands on its own as a must-see event for true sports fans.

Kenyon Ladies, Lord swimmers sweep Case Western, Ohio Northern

Kenyon’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept a double-double meet Saturday at Steen Aquatic Center. Ania Axas and Jennah Fadely each won two events Saturday and steered the Kenyon College Ladies swimming and diving team to a double-dual home sweep, and the Kenyon College Lords swimming and diving team won 15 of 16 events and defeated both their opponents.

Yellow Jackets wrestlers edged out for first at Ron Thomas Invite

Three Mount Vernon wrestlers struck gold at last weekend’s Ron Thomas Senior Invitational at Jonathan Alder High School in. Plain City, Ohio, and finished second among 21 teams. The Jackets were edged out of first by Licking Valley, 170-169. Grove City finished third with 154 points and host Jonathan Alder was fourth with 146.

Gabby Daniels scored career-high 29 points and Fredericktown broke the game open in the third quarter to beat Ontario by 26 points on MLK Day, 53-27. Fredericktown, now 10-6 on the season (5-4 in KMAC play), rebounded from a 6-point loss to Northmor last weekend, with a thorough throttling of the Warriors (3-12 and 1-7 in Mid-Ohio play).

Spencer Payne had a career night for Danville, but it wasn’t enough for the Blue Devils to derail undefeated (in KMAC) Centerburg, Monday night. 51-game streak ends: No.2-ranked Cardington-Lincoln upset by River Valley, 47-32

The Cardington-Lincoln girls basketball team was enjoying a dream season at 13-0, and 8-0 in KMAC play, and were ranked No. 2 in Division III by AP and No. 3 by MaxPreps. The Lady Pirates were on a 51-game regular season winning streak with 65-straight KMAC victories. Cardington-Lincoln entered the game after a rough week. After having five players out during the week with COVID, the team found out at 2 pm on game day that team-leader Dana Bertke was unavailable due to illness. An initial COVID test showed negative at the time, but according to C-L head coach Jamie Edwards, “She was definitely in no shape to play. And midway through the first half, Mikayla Linkous, another starter, was in the locker room throwing up."

Let’s talk coaching. Back in the day, coaches were hard-liners. My way or the highway. Do what I tell you or take a seat and grab some pine. Coaches used to have players “run through walls,” or go entire practices without water, or have players run an extra 10 laps or have them “drop and give me 20.” It worked then, but does that work now?
