Yellow Jackets wrestlers place 6th at Boardman Spartan meet

The Mount Vernon High School wrestling team competed in the Boardman Spartan meet last weekend at Boardman High School, and the Yellow Jackets finished sixth of 17 teams.

Brecksville, Ohio won the meet with 216.0 points, Aurora was second, Austintown-Fitch third, Hickory (PA) fourth, River Valley fifth and Mount Vernon sixth with 106.0 points, ahead of Stowe, St. Vincent-St. Mary and McDowell.

Wrestlers' results for Mount Vernon:

  • Dylan Hartman (14-5) went 3-1 and placed third at 113 pounds.
  • Colton Spurgeon (20-3) won at 126 pounds, going 4-0, beating Kaden McGohan (13-7) of Aurora in the finals.
  • Ryland Firebaugh (13-7) went 1-2 at 132 pounds.
  • Gabe Shannon (13-8) placed seventh at 138 pounds, going 3-2.
  • Jake Taylor (13-7) went 1-2 at 150 pounds.
  • Karter Harris (17-11) went 2-3 and placed eighth at 157 pounds
  • Kyler Howard (12-11) went 1-2 at 165 pounds.
  • Zach Thomas (20-6) placed second at 175 pounds, going 2-1, losing in the final to undefeated Sean O’Horo (22-0) from Boardman.
  • Nate Stradley (14-2) won at 285 pounds, going 3-0, beating Daren Christine (9-2) from Connealt in the finals.

Rinheart wins silver at Heart of Ohio Silver

In a separate meet, Mount Vernon’s only female wrestler won a silver medal.

In the Heart of Ohio Girls Wrestling Invitational Jan. 16 at Mechanicsburg High School,  Emma Rinheart of Mount Vernon improved her record to 22-2 with a second-place finish, going 3-1 in the competition. In the first round, she pinned Kelsey Filo of Hamilton Township (0-4) in 34 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Rinehart pinned Lebanon’s Andi Addis (6-8) in 1:45. In the semifinals, Rinehart pinned Ava Nelson of Mentor (12-2) in 5:58, bringing her to the finals. Rinehart lost by a fall in 1:06 to undefeated Raegan Briggs of Harrison (14-0).

Rinheart was the only Yellow Jacket to wrestle at the meet, which was won by  Harrison, with Oletangy Orange placing second and Delaware Dempsey finishing third, among 105 schools.
