Beyond the booming cannons and buried treasure of the Buckeye Lake Pirate Fest lies a story of passion and community spirit, steered by Kelly and Neena Collins. This year, their dedication promises another memorable event for those heading to Buckeye Lake.
The Pirate Fest is more than just an event; it is the realization of a shared dream. Deeply connected to the Buckeye Lake community, Kelly and Neena envisioned a festival that would foster adventure and belonging. Through their collaboration, the Buckeye Lake Pirate Fest has become a tradition celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere.
"Our love for Buckeye Lake is the compass guiding our efforts," says Kelly Collins. "Neena's incredible ability to navigate the details perfectly complements my… well, let's just say I bring the pirate spirit!" Neena Collins adds, "Watching our initial spark of an idea grow into this incredible festival has been an amazing adventure."
Known as Captain Kelly and Skipper Charlie, they immerse themselves in every aspect of the event. Their commitment to crafting a welcoming atmosphere is key to the festival's success.
Kelly and Neena also established Buckeye Lake Boater Training four years ago in response to a need for boater education. As the sole ODNR Certified Boat Trainer at Buckeye Lake, they deliver safety courses and host a free boating safety seminar each spring.
Their expertise in event production includes successful careers in Marketing and IT. They have also channeled their entrepreneurial spirit into ventures like a Columbus-based haunted attraction and Makeup Artist Agency. They founded and formerly ran the Midwest Haunters Convention (MHC) in Columbus, Ohio.
The seeds of the Pirate Fest were sown when Kelly formed the Buckeye Lake Pirates. What began as a costumed pub crawl during Winter Fest became a spirited community group with nearly 1000 members.
This year's Pirate Fest offers various attractions: A bustling Pirate Marketplace with over 100 vendors, an outdoor Pirate Ship Playland, indoor Pirates Cove for Kids, a Tri-County Treasure Hunt spanning 40 locations around Buckeye Lake, themed Treasure Hunt tours for different enthusiasts, special offers at local businesses, live music, and engaging activities.
The festival is not only entertainment but also supports local economy and strengthens community bonds. It benefits Harbor Community Center in Buckeye Lake and includes a food drive supporting Buckeye Lake LEADS & Food Pantry.
