The Mount Vernon Babe Ruth Association, doing business as Knox Babe Ruth League of Knox County has scheduled in-person registration for 13-to-16-year olds, at the Babe Ruth field announcer’s booth at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue.

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 23rd ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. This week, our female Athlete of the Week had a huge fourth quarter to end an opponent’s dominance, and our male Athlete of the Week gave a performance of the ages in a rivalry game of the ages.

Centerburg drops a non-conference game to River Valley, but sits atop KMAC at 11-0 The Centerburg boys’ basketball team has been cruising all season at the top of the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference, but on Feb. 16 the Trojans met their match against River Valley and lost a non-conference matchup at home 86-52, dropping to 17-2 on the year. The loss did not affect their conference record, which sits at 11-0.

Danville girls' basketball knocks off Shekinah Christian in first round playoff win. The Lady Blue Devils were still coming off a huge upset victory over Cardington-Lincoln (and a tune-up game blow-out win) and rode the momentum into the Division 4 sectional playoffs, with the Blue Devils cruising to a 56-15 blowout victory in the first round over Shekinah Christian on Feb. 16.
Pins fall at KMAC Bowling Tournament Bulldogs pace boys; Northmor outrolls girls

Favored East Knox and Crestline, who finished 1-2 during the KMAC regular season in boys’ bowling with 10-3 records, finished 1-2 in the KMAC Bowling Tournament held at Victory Lanes, Galion, Ohio February 11. In the girls’ tournament held the following day, favored Northmor, who finished the regular season at 13-1 with Fredericktown, 10-3, in second, had no trouble in outclassing the field to capture the title. The East Knox boys won by seven pins over Crestline, representing a complete turnaround from last season, in which the Bulldog bowlers went 0-12

The Super Bowl ended with Matthew Stafford's final kneel-down. For fans of ritual, the game didn’t fully end until Rams defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson doused head coach Sean McVay with the traditional Gatorade bath. Bettors even wagered on the color, which was blue and filled with lots of ice. Is this exercise enhancement and hydration shower still exciting for you or is it time to move on? Is it still trendy or is it so 1980s?

They have the play-offs made, and they proved they will be a post-season force as they took down the once-unbeatable and now vulnerable Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates (17-3, 11-1 KMAC) by a five point margin, 68-63

Knepp scores 26, but ‘Devils beat ‘Dogs 45-44. Another memorable, for-the-history-books Devil-Dogs match in the long- multi-sport rivalry of Danville vs. East Knox high schools took place Feb. 10 at “The Pound” in Howard. In this varsity basketball game EK’s Shane Knepp put on a scoring clinic with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory, as the underdog Blue Devils beat the favored Bulldogs in a squeaker, 45-44.
