Streak ends: Danville readies for playoffs, upsets slumping Lady Pirates, 68-63
Danville’s Lady Blue Devils are having a strong season at 14-5 and 9-2 in KMAC play. They have the playoffs made, and they proved they will be a postseason force as they took down the once-unbeatable Cardington-Lincoln Lady Pirates (17-3, 11-1 KMAC) by a five point margin, 68-63
Cardington came in with a 68-game KMAC unbeaten streak and had secured the KMAC league title. It had also lost two of its last five. Danville came out firing with 20 points in the first quarter on balanced scoring from six players to take a 10-point lead at 20-10. Four Lady Pirates hit the twine in the first.
The ’Devils slipped to 10 in the second, and Cardington-Lincoln showed its grit by reversing the first and taking a 20-10 second to tie the game at the half, 30-30. Alenah Boeshart hit two threes in the quarter for Danville. Beth Hardwick scored seven and Mac Linkous hit five in the second for C-L.
Cardington-Lincoln took control in the third with a 14-9 advantage to assume a five-point led entering the fourth. Kambry Edwards scored seven point in the frame to lead C-L.
After a nine point third, Danville went to work in the fourth and put up an energized 29 points to stun Cardington-Lincoln, who fought to the end and put up 19 points. Proper did most of the damage for Danville with 17 fourth-quarter points on two threes, a deuce and 9-for-9 at the foul line. Brooklynn Hess scored six, and Boeshart hit five free throws for the Blue Devils. Karsyn Edwards made two from three-point range, and Hardwick scored five in the effort for the Lady Pirates.
Ella Proper finished with a game-high 20 for Danville (she also had three steals on defense), supported by Boeshart with 18 and Brooklynn Hess with 11. Cardington-Lincoln was led by Kambry Edwards with 14, Linkous with 13, Lydia Hess with 13, and Dana Bertke with 12.
Freddies get stronger as game progresses to beat Panthers, 47-37
Fredericktown got off to a slow start but was steady after the first and took down the Licking Valley Panthers, 47-37, Feb. 12.
The Panthers led the Freddies 13-7 after one as four girls combined for seven points in the Freddies’ first. Audrey Bouton led the Freddies’ comeback with six points in the second, and Annie Maglott scored five as Fredericktown took a 22-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The teams played a tight third, and Fredericktown added a deuce to the lead to enter the fourth ahead 32-27. Bouton again sank six points for Fredericktown in the third. The Freddies controlled play in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 15-10 to win by 10. Grace Sipes was good for eight in the fourth, and Jill Bouton put in five. For the game, Audrey Bouton paced the Freddies with 14 points, and Sipes finished with 10.
Fredericktown sits at 15-7 on the year and is 7-5 in KMAC play, and Licking valley is 11-10.
