The teams with the best records had the top players and coaches, according to the KMAC, as Centerburg's Mick Mead and Cardington-Lincoln's Beth Hardwick topped the selections realease by he conference, and their coached also brought home hardware.

Cougars men’s and women’s teams lose in quarterfinals. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s and women’s basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end as both teams lost Crossroads league semifinals matches this week. The women lost at Taylor University 82-70, and the men were beaten by Grace, 82-62.

Hardcourt stars score big points in clean sweep for Danville

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s 24th ATHLETE OF THE WEEK nominations continues the established procedure of spotlighting student-athletes’ skills and performances on the fields and courts of action. This week, we have a clean sweep for Danville, with two basketball leaders, one who only needed the first half to shine in victory and the other who did his damage in the second half to perform valiantly in defeat.
Junior Jackets win girls basketball tourney

The Knox County Basketball League held its inaugural tournament last weekend and the Mount Vernon Junior Jackets girls team came away with the championship. The league, in its initial year, serves as a feeder program for boys and girls in grades third through sixth to develop their skills to graduate into local high school programs. Teams from Centerburg, Danville, East Knox, Fredericktown and Mount Vernon school districts were represented in the competition.

There is the joy of smaller nations competing with one or two or three athletes compared to the excesses of USA, Canada, China and the ROC. Now, about the athletes, these talented, focused, obsessed athletes work for four years to win, and sometimes work for 16 years to get the gold, but at what price?
