Chautauqua opens season 15 with General George Patton

On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Chautauqua Series opens its 15th season, with Ken Hammontree as General George Patton, describing his experiences at the Battle of the Bulge. The program will be at the Grand Hotel (12 Public Square in downtown Mount Vernon) at 7 PM. The Chautauqua Series is brought to you with the help of a grant provided by the Ariel Foundation and is donation based with all monies collected going to the performers.

This week, two hard-court winners are spotlighted and two wrestlers gain gold for their team.

Coaching changes with the times

Let’s talk coaching. Back in the day, coaches were hard-liners. My way or the highway. Do what I tell you or take a seat and grab some pine. Coaches used to have players “run through walls,” or go entire practices without water, or have players run an extra 10 laps or have them “drop and give me 20.” It worked then, but does that work now?

Assistance with water and wastewater bills available

The Ohio Department of Development and Kno-Ho-Co-Ashland Community Action Commission will help income-eligible Ohioans with water and wastewater (sewer) assistance. The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program provides eligible Ohioans assistance paying water and wastewater bills. The program runs until Sept. 30, 2022.

Knox County sports: Highlights of a unique year

The 2021 calendar year in sports was a unique one, as COVID-19 restrictions, protocols, illnesses, responses and mandates affected the nation, entire schools, and impacted high school sports as well. The Ohio School Athletic Association recommended policies to follow and offered legal consequences of non-compliance. State and federal mandates affected athletes, practices and scheduling.
