Cougars lacrosse team opens with 11-1 win over Heidelberg

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2022 season in dominant fashion, scoring at will to defeat Heidelberg University (0-1) by a final score of 11-1 at Cougar Field on Wednesday.

The Cougars dominated the matchup with three goals in each of the first three quarters and allowed only one goal with just 3:02 remaining in the game. The Cougar defense stood strong through the 60 minutes of play and forced turnovers to give themselves more chances offensively. On the offensive end, the Cougars took advantage of their opportunities, including a man-up situation.

The Cougars got scores from five players, three of whom scored multiple goals. Matt Quire was on fire for the Cougars, scoring four goals to lead the MVNU attack. Johnny Grumney got a hat trick on the evening. Luke Modesto pitched in with two goals, and Kaelin Tran and Ian Ranck each scored a goal.

Defensively, Joshua Hageman was stellar in goal with seven saves, allowing only the one late goal. 

The Cougars will be back in action today as they travel to Mount Saint Joseph University in Cincinnati. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

Kenyon Lords and Ladies swimmers begin championships with wins 

On the opening day of the four-day North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships, Kenyon College's men's and women's teams started strong. The women pulled out a win over host Denison University, and the men’s swimming and diving team collected two wins to gain the lead.

In the only event of the day on the women’s side, Ania Axas, Sarah Hoffman, Sydney Geboy, and Crile Hart won the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:24.59. DePauw University finished behind the Ladies with a time of 7:40.42. With the first race done, Kenyon took an early lead in the team standings with 70 points. DePauw was second with 62 points, while the College of Wooster was third place with 60 points after day one.

On the men's side, in the three-meter dive, Israel Zavaleta won the conference title and teammate Drew Albrecht finished third. In the lone swimming event of the night, Noah Hargrove, Noah Althoff, Yurii Kosian, and Bryan Fitzgerald stole the 800-yard freestyle relay from host Denison University. The Lords' time of 6:36.01 clocked in just ahead of the Big Red ‘A’ relay team’s time of 6:37.42.

Kenyon was atop the standings after the first day with a total of 163 points, followed by Denison’s 149, and Wabash sits third in the team standings with 75 points.

The championship runs with a full slte of events through today. 

Mount Vernon Babe Ruth League registration next Saturday

There are only three days left to register for 2022 Babe Ruth League baseball. The Mount Vernon Babe Ruth Association / dba / Knox Babe Ruth League of Knox County has scheduled in-person registration for 13-to-16-year olds, at the Babe Ruth field announcer’s booth at Memorial Park on Mount Vernon Avenue.

Registration dates include: 

Saturday, Feb. 19, noon-2 p.m.

Thursday, Feb 24, 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

And the last day for registration:

Saturday, March 5, noon-2 p.m.

New player tryouts will take place Saturday, Mar. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon.
