Lady Jackets finish 3rd in Washington XC championships

Mount Vernon's cross country reams traveled to the NW Conference XC Championships at Civic Field in Bellingham, Washington, Oct. 20, and while the boys found tough sledding, the girls squad finished in third place.

Mount Vernon's Lady Jackets finished third in the 12-team Women’s event won by Anacortes with 33 points, over Sehome (79 points), the Lady Jackets (106 points) and fourth-place Bellingham (106 points). The Lady Yellow Jackets were led by three Top-20 finishes. In the Women’s 5000-meter event won by Jessica Frydenlund of Anacortes, Taylor Hoyer led the Lady Jackets with a 15th-place showing in 20:50.51, crossing the finish line just ahead of teammates Ava Rifenbury, who was 16th, in 20:54.62 and Leila Stampanoni, who finished 17th in 20:55.59. Also running strong were Keira Ruble (23rd), Elin Neuhaus (37th) and Ana Capote (65th). Also finishing for MV was Sophia Grechiskin.

On the boys side, Sqealcium finished first, Sehome.was second and Bellingham was third. Mount Vernon finished in 12th place among 14 schools paticpiating in the 5000-meter race. With 121 runners in the boys division, Zack Munson of Sehome won the race in 15:49.77. The Jackets’ top runner was Nicholas Hoyer, who finished in 38th place (17:56.93). Noha Brown was the No.2 Jackets runner, finishing in 68th place and Jack Fikkert was 78th. Other MVHS finishers included Chris Oliver, Luke Wright, Logan Warrick, Alex martin and Ulie Craig.
