MOUNT VERNON – OCC tournament tennis was played locally, and the Yellow Jackets fought to a fourth-place finish. 

Mount Vernon High School hosted the Ohio Cardinal Conference’s girls tennis team tournament at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Memorial Park courts on Friday, Sept. 30, and MV was one of three teams to have three or more players medal in the tournament. The tourney crown went to Wooster, in a close battle for the top spot with Lexington.

Mount Vernon’s effort was led by Faith Hunter and Grace Mayville, finalists in the second doubles tournament; Cameron Carlson, a third-place finisher in second singles; and Emma Annett, who finished in third place in the first singles tournament.  

Annett was seeded fifth in the first singles tournament and defeated her West Holmes opponent, seeded fourth, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. She then lost to the No. 1 seed from Wooster 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. In the consolation round, Annett defeated her third-seeded opponent from Lexington, 8-6.

Carlson was seeded fourth in the second singles tournament and won her first-round match against her Mansfield Madison opponent, 6-1, 6-0. She lost to the No. 1 seed from Wooster in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0, and in the consolation match, she came back from 2-5 down to defeat the third seed from Ashland, 9-7.

Hunter and Mayville were seeded third in the second doubles tournament. In the first round, they defeated their New Philadelphia opponents, 6-2, 6-0. They then defeated the No. 2-seeded team from Lexington in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-2. In the final, they lost to the No. 1-seeded team from Ashland, 6-2, 6-0.
