The competition season for the Yellow Jacket swim team is ending, with districts coming up this Saturday.
Last weekend, the Yellow Jackets competed in the sectionals, and after the waves had settled, Bre McCluskey, Rylee Jarosz, Anna Rhodebeck and Julie King will move on in their 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Jarosz qualified in her individual 100 breaststroke event.
Centerburg junior Owen Merriman qualified individually for his 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Merriman has been practicing with the Mount Vernon team all season after being recruited by assistant swim coach Staci Brenneman to practice with MV while competing for Centerburg.
The rest of the swim team swam hard, with many earning new personal bests and meeting their own season goals. Olivia Wiley met her goal of 28.82 time for her 50 freestyle. Sarah Misarti reached her goal for her 500 freestyle with a time of 6:38.81, dropping 39 seconds. Clare Clarkson dropped 13 seconds in her 200 IM with a time of 2:50.57 and 2 seconds in her 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:20.93. Rebekah Lebold dropped 5 seconds in her 100 freestyle with a time of 1:02.91. Ava Dominguiez dropped 8 seconds in her 500 freestyle and 3 seconds in her 100 breaststroke. Grace Laymon dropped 9 seconds in her 100 breaststroke. Tyler Davidson dropped 2 seconds in his 50 freestyle with a time of 27.05 and another 6 seconds in his 100 freestyle with a time of 1:05.72. Will Laymon dropped time in his 50 freestyle with a time of 23.78. Bryan Sabula dropped 4 seconds in his 100 freestyle. James Frazee dropped 14 seconds in his 200 freestyle with a time of 2:51.10 and 8 seconds in his 100 backstroke with a time of 1:39.14. Andrew Conway dropped 6 seconds in his 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:26.94. Devin Beckett dropped 4 seconds in his 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:24.53.
In addition to the swimming at sectionals, three MVHS divers qualified for diving districts, which were Feb. 13. This is the first season the Jackets have had a diving team where students learned to soar in the air. Bryan Sabula, Devin Beckett, and Ethan Brooks worked hard all season to compete at districts.
Brenneman said she is very proud of everyone for putting in the work to improve their swimming skill all season. “All that hard work certainly paid off at sectionals.”
Additionally, the 10 swim team seniors will have their Senior Night recognition at the boys basketball game tonight.
