The final month of regular season action is here for the local girls' basketball teams, and here are a few games highlighted from last week as the teams focus on finishing strong and setting themselves up for the postseason.

The Freddie Invite was held on Jan. 13 with 22 teams competing, and New Philadelphia came away with the top spot with a score of 285.

The Mount Vernon wrestling team competed at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School on Jan. 13, where Alex Taylor took home first place and the team placed 23rd out of 57.

Zalina Proper and Allie McMillen each put up a double-double, leading the West Holmes Knights (5-4, 4-1) to a 44-37 win over Mount Vernon (2-8, 1-5) on Dec. 30.

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets (4-2, 2-1) battled all game long with Utica (0-4, 0-1), and while the Redskins hung tight much of the way, Zane Barber and Isaiah Columber combined for 33 points to help secure the 56-43 win on Dec. 19.

The Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team is off to a hot start with a 3-1 overall record and 2-0 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. Coach Nick Coon said they the team has showed early success, they need to keep working on the court and in practice to keep the pace.

The Division II All-Ohio football team was announced on Dec. 6, and Jonny Askew of the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets was named an honorable mention after leading the team’s offense this season.

The Ashland Arrows (1-3, 1-0) battled it out with Mount Vernon (1-2, 0-1) on Dec. 2, taking a close 48-45 win led by Kennedy Lacy with 16 points.

The Mount Vernon High School bowling team has a mix of returning players and new additions this season, led by senior captains Jace Kyle, Alan Townsend and Zach Johnson who have goal to win the conference title and make it to the district tournament.

The Mount Vernon and East Knox wrestling teams are coached by Corey Firebaugh, as the teams train together, and each team brings back quality athletes who are looking to make waves this season.

The Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team opened up the winter season in a non-conference matchup with Centerburg, and Quentin Rowland was the man of the hour putting up a quality night scoring, rebounding and playmaking for the Yellow Jackets in a 58-32 victory on Dec. 1.
