Yellow Jackets upset by Olentangy Liberty in District Semifinal

The No. 5 Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets went down by four runs early and could never recover, as they were upset by the No. 13 Olentangy Liberty Patriots 5-3 in the District Semifinals of the Division 1 Central 4 baseball tournament on May 21.

The Patriots got on the board first in the opening frame, going up 3-0 on an RBI single by McCafrey Tatum and having two runs score on a fielder’s choice. They put another run on the board in the fourth inning when Alex Leonard ripped an RBI single to centerfield. 

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, Kayden Packard reached on an error and Konner Daughriety scored on the play for the Yellow Jackets. Jonny Askew then singled and Packard scored on an error.

In the top of the sixth inning, Leonard hit an RBI double to make it a 5-2 game. Mount Vernon cut the lead to two runs in the seventh inning when Hayden Higgins scored on a wild pitch, but the Patriots held on for the big win.

Daughriety picked up the loss, going five innings, allowing four earned runs, four hits and four walks, while striking out eight batters. He was the top offensive performer for the Yellow Jackets, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Askew went 1-for-2 with a run and a walk, and Packard was 1-for-2 with a walk.

The Yellow Jackets ended their season with a 20-5 record.
