Marissa Rutter won OCC Runner of the Year. | Coach Kathy Thayer

Mount Vernon’s Marissa Rutter had a huge day a the Ohio Cardinal Conference track and field meet, winning the conference title in three events and a silver in another. She has had an incredible season and this time out gave her the Mount Vernon News Athlete of the Week Award for the second time.

Rutter set an OCC meet record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.83 to win gold. In the 300 meter hurdles, she also broke the meet record and a 34 year school record with a time of 45.04 for another gold. Rutter was on the gold medal winning 4x100 meter relay team also, which clocked in at 50.10 for a season best that nearly broke the school record. In the 4x400 meters, the Yellow Jackets were second with a time of 4:09.78. She ran a 59 second split and helped the team to the fastest relay time they have had since 2008. 

Rutter earned 49 points and helped the team to an OCC runner up finish for the third straight year. She was named OCC Runner of the Year for the second season in a row.

“Marissa is a workhorse,” Coach Kathy Thayer said. “There isn't ‘no’ or ‘quit’ in her vocabulary. She had a difficult set of events, and she had her best performances of the season in each of those races.”

Thayer added, “She loves the sport, loves competing, and is a joy to watch.”
