Sports Briefs: ‘Jackets Girls tennis team wins two medals .Mount Vernon girls came away with two medals in last week’s Ohio Cardinal Conference Tennis Championships, held last Saturday, Oct. 2, at Mount Vernon Nazarene Tennis Courts and Memorial tennis Courts. Centerburg Lady Trojans go undefeated in golf. The Centerburg Lady Trojans golf team defeated Northmor, Sept. 29, to a sweep the KMAC conference with an 8-0 record. With a 195-210 victory, Centerburg finished the conference schedule undefeated.

MOUNT VERNON – Isaiah Jones came within inches of a game-winner against one of the top teams in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.Instead, the ball sailed just wide of the rain-soaked goal, and Mount Vernon settled for a 2-2 draw at home Tuesday against Ashland.Jones had already scored both goals for the Yellow Jackets when his final opportunity came with just two minutes to go.

Participation in football is declining across the country, but that isn’t the case for Mount Vernon High School.

MOUNT VERNON – As the Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket Colt football teams looked on, their high school counterparts tried to light up the field with big plays and fireworks.However, that show fizzled out before the first half ended. After two long touchdowns by Jonny Askew, the Jackets could muster little else Friday, as the previously winless Ashland Arrows coasted to a 35-17 Ohio Cardinal Conference victory at Yellow Jacket Stadium. Askew, a sophomore, scored a pair of field-length touchdowns each time he touched the ball in the first quarter.

Mount Vernon High School sophomore Logan Eggert is only 15 years old and has already won a national track competition. He finished first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase competition August 4 in Houston at the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

After improving to a second place finish in the Ohio Cardinal Conference, last season, the Mount Vernon golf team is ready to fight for a league title.  

In the space of a few minutes, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets showed their fans just what kind of team they will be in 2021.

The Kent Miller Colonial Fall Invitational was held Aug. 14 at the Hiawatha Golf Course with 20 teams from all over the state competing in the tournament.

For Mount Vernon varsity football, 2021 is a year of change and adjustment on both sides of the ball.
