The Mount Vernon High School Lady Jackets softball team temporarily set aside their sports equipment this week to serve lunch to Knox County veterans. This initiative was part of a heartfelt gesture aimed at expressing gratitude to those who have served in the armed forces.
According to the event organizers, the gathering took place on Tuesday and involved players, coaches, and community members who came together to honor local veterans. The student-athletes participated by preparing and serving meals, greeting guests, and engaging in conversations with the attending veterans.
"Giving back to the community is a big part of our program," said head coach Ryan Pentz. He emphasized the importance for players to understand the sacrifices made by veterans and to express appreciation in a tangible manner.
The lunch was organized in collaboration with Knox County Veterans Services, an organization that regularly hosts events to support and recognize area veterans. For the Lady Jackets, this event was not just another team activity but an opportunity to learn valuable life lessons beyond the softball field.
The players conveyed their gratitude towards those who served and expressed a desire to make such service activities a recurring tradition. "Thank you to Knox County Veterans and all veterans for your service," the team shared in a statement. "We are honored to serve you."
