The Mount Vernon High School girls' tennis team achieved a tie for third place at the 11th Annual Kokosing Valley Community Tennis Association High School Girls’ Tennis Team Invitational. The event took place on Saturday, August 9, at Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Ramser Tennis Courts.
According to the tournament results, the Yellow Jackets delivered strong performances across various divisions. The doubles teams of seniors Dede Burcham and Scarlett Turner, along with senior Zoe Schemrich and sophomore Audrey Rieder, reached the finals in the first and second doubles divisions, respectively. Additionally, senior Natalie Gourley secured third place in the second singles division.
The tournament featured eight schools: Bloom Carroll, Big Walnut, Clear Fork, Dover, Newark, and St. Frances de Sales High Schools. Teams accumulated points based on individual players’ placements in five divisions corresponding to varsity positions.
Big Walnut emerged victorious with 27 points, followed by Newark with 21 points. Mount Vernon tied for third place with Bloom Carroll at 22 points each. Other participating schools included St. Frances de Sales (19), Dover (12), Clear Fork (8), and Mount Vernon’s Junior Varsity team (5).
Other notable results for the Yellow Jackets included senior Cameron Carlson placing fifth in first singles and senior Bella Glorius finishing fifth in third singles. Junior varsity players Nika Glorius, Makayla Davis, Emily Guilliams, and Inna Hardnock also participated.
Individual division winners were Sanaa Lisath of DeSales in first singles, Bella Sherman of Newark in second singles, Lane Rothhaar of Big Walnut in third singles, and doubles champions from Big Walnut in both the first and second doubles divisions.
