Toombs scores 20 in Fredericktown win over Pirates

The Fredericktown boys’ basketball team (7-5, 5-2) won their second straight game with a 57-46 win over KMAC rival Cardington-Lincoln (9-4, 5-2) on Jan. 20.

The Pirates had a 14-12 lead after one quarter, but Fredericktown ended up with a 21-20 lead at halftime. Fredericktown had a 16-8 third quarter and a 20-18 fourth to secure the nine point win.

The Freddies shot 43.8% and were 3-for-8 from three, while the Pirates were held to 25.9% and 2-for-21 from deep. Cardington-Lincoln like 39-38 in boards, but Fredericktown led 13-10 in assists. On defense, the Pirates had a 13-11 steal advantage and 6-5 advantage in blocks. 

Fredericktown’s Gavin Toombs led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting. He also grabbed 12 boards for a double-double performance. Toombs tallied an assist, two steals and a block for the Freddies, as well.

Blake Sipes had 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals. 

Grant Hartley had five points, two rebounds, an assist and two steals. Brode Davis put up three points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game. Trevor Bellman, Carson Rinehart and Bradyn Clevenger each had four points. Bellman added four assists and three boards, while Rinehart had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks. Clevenger had seven rebounds.

“I thought Brode Davis and Grant Hartley's ability to control pace and tempo with their pressure early was key to keeping them out of transition,” said Fredericktown Coach Derek Dibling. “Our ability to chase them off the three point line was key for us tonight. Our young crew took a big step tonight with their ability to execute a game plan and finish strong down the stretch.”

Cardington-Lincoln was led by AJ Brehm’s 12 points, six boards, three assists and a block. AJ Hall and Kalin Briggs each had eight points. Hall had five rebounds, two assists and four steals, while Briggs had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Warren Garrison had seven points, one rebound, one assist and three steals. Isaiah Ward had five points and Brayden Lackey and Journey Williamson each had three points. Lackey had nine and six rebounds respectively.
