The Mount Vernon volleyball team has had a solid season with a 16-5 record and 11-3 in Ohio Cardinal Conference play, good for second. Much of this success is due to the terrific play by senior setter Tori Burdette who is coming off a week where she led the Yellow Jackets to a pair of sweeps with a combined 65 assists. For that reason she is the Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.
"Tori is a hard worker and has done a beautiful job running our offense for us this entire season," said Coach Lauren Townley. "Tori is able to find the open space for a a setter dump or get the ball to our front line to put the ball away. She is extremely passionate about the game of volleyball, confident in her abilities and has a huge will to win, which has help us reach 16 wins this season”
Burdette has played a team high 74 sets and racked up 564 assists, which comes to 7.6 assists per set. She is third on the team with 200 digs, has 23 assists and a serving percentage of 95.7%. She is 11th in the state of Ohio in the assist department.
Last week against New Philadelphia she helped lead the team to a three set win with 30 assists, 13 digs, six kills and three aces with a .417 hitting percentage. Against Madison Comprehensive she was maybe even better, with 35 assists in a three set win, to go with seven digs and four kills.
Burdette has been lighting up the court just in time for the end of the regular season and the start of tournament play. Congratulations to Tori and good luck with the rest of the season!
