This week’s ATHLETES of the WEEK are Jill Bouton (Fredericktown High School volleyball) and Spencer Hughes (Mount Vernon High School golf).

Female Athlete of the Week

Jill Bouton has been named the female athlete of the week by Mount Vernon News.

Bouton, a senior playing as an OH/MB for Fredericktown High School, delivered an impressive performance in recent matches. She recorded a team-high 17 kills against Licking Valley and 13 against Northmor. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in securing a victory against Centerburg, elevating her team to a first-place standing in the KMAC.

“Jill has really stepped up as a leader this season and has really become a go to for us on the court. Not only is she a great teammate on the floor, but off the floor as well,” Cassandra Vaughn, Fredericktown High School varsity volleyball coach, told the Mount Verno News.

Honorable mention

Sutton Reynolds and Klaire Willis stand out as the sole two girls participating in the little flag football league of Mount Vernon Colt Football League.

Jennifer Kennedy, a representative from the Mount Vernon Colt Football League, highlighted their admirable qualities.

“Both show determination, grit, good sportsmanship and pride in football even though it’s not the ‘norm’ for girls to play,” Jennifer Kennedy, of the Mount Vernon Colt Football League, told the Mount Vernon News. “In a sport dominated by boys— be a Sutton or Klaire.”

Male athlete of the week

Spencer Hughes has been named the Male Athlete of the Week by Mount Vernon News.

Hughes, a student at Mount Vernon High School, recently earned the title of OCC Co-Player of the Year. Additionally, he showcased his golfing prowess as he secured the medalist position at OCC Tournament #3 held at Shelby Crossing Golf Club, shooting an impressive 75.

"Spencer has worked really hard on his game over the past 4 years and has really grown as a player. Being named OCC Player of the Year is a huge accomplishment for him and our program. I am extremely proud of him, not only for this, but because of what a great teammate he is for our younger players."Anthony Savage, golf coach at Mount Vernon High School, told the Mount Vernon News.

Honorable mention

Mason Turske of the Centerburg Football team demonstrated his exceptional skills on both sides of the field.

Facing off against Loudonville, Turske left an indelible mark on the game.

Offensively, Turske made his presence felt with four receptions, accumulating a total of 77 yards and scoring two crucial touchdowns.

He showcased his versatility with a remarkable punt return, covering 48 yards to find the end zone, electrifying the crowd with his speed and agility.

On defense he also notched an interception.

“After coming off on an illness earlier in the week, Turske came out feeling strong vs Loudonville. Senior captain represented the Trojans very well with not only his performance out on the field, but keeping the momentum and encouragement on the sidelines with his teammates,” Jonny Henesy told the Mount Vernon News.

The Mount Vernon News sports department is in its third year of the MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK, a school-year weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools.

To fuel it, we encourage every area high school coach to send us nominations, but if they don’t, we’ll find our own. We also encourage community members to send us their nominations.

We take all nominations seriously and will consider all that we receive. An athlete can be nominated more than once, as a worthy student-athlete can gain recognition as often as he or she earns it.

Based on their performances, we will select an ATHLETE of the WEEK and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments.

We will run a picture of the winner and their weekly stats or other information provided. We believe this program will help local student-athletes secure scholarships while gaining additional recognition for school athletic programs.

If we do not receive a boy and a girl in some weeks, we will spotlight only the winner from the group of nominations. These student-athletes should be commended for their accomplishments.

Help us do that and please send your nominations to kyle.barnett@mountvernonnews.com.
