The Mount Vernon News sports department’s Athlete of the Week is a weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools.  Based on their performances, we will select an Athlete of the Week and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments.

Last week, the Thanksgiving holiday kept competition light, so this week, we have only a male Athlete of the Week, and he dominated in boys basketball. Our Athlete of the Week is Hudson Rohler, Mount Vernon basketball.

Male Athlete of the Week

Hudson Rohler

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets opened its 2022 season Nov. 23, with a 57-39 win over Centerburg. Hudson Rohler led all scorers in the game with 21 points -- the only Mount Vernon player to score in double digits.

Mount Vernon basketball coach Nick Coon praised Rohler for his comeback after an injury. "Hudson brought great energy to the game on both ends of the floor against Centerburg," Coon said. "It was great to see him back on the floor with his best friends and teammates after missing last season due to a torn ACL. We look for Hudson as well as his teammates to continue to improve each game."

Coon said Rohler is more than a basketball player; he is a caring individual. "Hudson is a great teammate that truly cares about his teammates,” Coon said. “He will do whatever is needed for the team to be successful. He worked hard in his rehab from the ACL injury to get back to this point because he cares so much for his teammates and wanted to be back on the court with them."

Honorable mention goes to Northmor’s Jaxson Wenger, who scored 18 points and drained four threes while hitting the boards for eight rebounds, blocking one, deflecting one and dishing out three assists in the Golden Knights’ loss to Elgin.

Highland’s Gavin Toombs was the top scorer for the Fighting Scots with 19 points, and Brock Church added 16 points in the victory over Lakewood.

Cardington-Lincoln’s A.J. Brehm finished with 12 points and was the only player in double figures for the Pirates in their win over Delaware Christian.

Centerburg was led by Colton Martin, who scored 12 points and was the only double-digit scorer on the team in their loss to Mount Vernon
