East Knox long-distance runner Nathan Streby knocked 7.62 seconds off his winning 800-meter time from last year and won by nearly 9 seconds | East Knox HS

Nathan Streby of East Knox ran away from the boys in the 800-meter run and Mount Vernon’s Sophie Zoldak did the same to the girls in the 3200, as 16 local teams squared off at the Fredericktown track meet, on the Freddies’ track, April 29. 

The Mount Vernon men and women dominated the podium. The Yellow Jacket boys won seven events, placed second seven times and finished third in four events. East Knox and Highland each won gold twice, and the Bulldogs, Scots and Danville’s Blue Devils each found the podium five times. On the girls' side, the Lady Jackets won eight events, finished second eight times and won bronze three times, while the host Freddie saw their girls win three events and reach the podium 12 times.

For the boys, in the 800-meter run, Streby knocked 7.62 seconds off his event-winning time from last year and won by nearly 9 seconds, and in the 3200, Utica’s Silas Buckenberger won by 14.18 seconds. In another blowout by EK, the Bulldogs’ 4x800 relay team beat second-place Utica by 13.46 seconds, and in the closest event, Mount Vernon’s 4x400 relay runners nipped East Knox by 0.04 seconds.

In girls' competition, in the 1600-meter run, Elsa Hoam of Fredericktown outran Mount Vernon’s Sophie Zoldak for first by 7.2 seconds, but Zoldak destroyed the field in the 3200-meter run, beating teammate Hannah Hofferberth for first by 47.99 seconds, and in the 100-meter hurdles, Fredericktown’s Ashley Cockrell won by a .44-second margin.
