The final month of regular season action is here for the local girls' basketball teams, and here are a few games highlighted from last week as the teams focus on finishing strong and setting themselves up for the postseason.

The Fredericktown High School (FHS) Alumni Association is pleased to announce its 31st fully endowed scholarship, the Dr. Robert & Patricia Hines Ronk & Family Scholarship.

Gavin Toombs lit it up for the Fredericktown boys’ basketball team (3-4, 1-1) to lead the Freddies to a tight 53-52 win over Clear Fork (2-4, 1-2) on Dec. 27.

The Fredericktown volleyball team's objective for the 2023 season is to "R.I.S.E. Up," with the acronym standing for: R-Relentlessness, I-Intentional, S-Sportsmanship, E-Elevate.

The Fredericktown football team lost some key players to graduation, including one of the top offensive performers in the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference (KMAC) and a total of five first-team All-KMAC players.

The members of the Central District Baseball Coaches Association (CDBCA) selected the top high school baseball players from the area and invited them to play in all-star games Tuesday, June 6, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Ian Muka signed to further his academic and golf careers at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, in a ceremony held at Fredericktown High School on May 4 in front of a group of Muka’s family and friends, as well as the school's athletic director and coaches.

The Fredericktown senior student-athlete signing parade continued, as Freddies long-distance runner Owen Krabill recently signed his commitment to run and study for the NAIA Division-2 Dordt University Defenders, who are based in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Track championships saw a motherlode of gold mined by several track stars, and baseball leaders played with gemlike consistency. Our Athletes of the Week are Juliette Laracuente (Highland track) and Kaid Carpenter (Fredericktown baseball).

Fredericktown’s prestigious list of current student-athletes who have signed formal commitments to further their athletic and academic careers in college continues, as track-and-field athlete Sydney Wilson will move on after her Freddies’ track days to run and vault for the Division 2 Minot State University Beavers in Minot, North Dakota.

Among the Fredericktown High School student-athletes who have signed recently to further their academic and athletic careers in college, it's Freddies’ three-sport standout Mason Hoeflich who will be attending Baldwin Wallace University.

The Lady Freddies are looking to build off their district championship season from last year with their sights set on a state title, anchored by a pair of first team All-KMAC players that look to lead an otherwise young Fredericktown squad.

Fredericktown record holder Elsa Hoam signed on March 2 to take her track skills to Ohio Wesleyan University.

Fredericktown continued its student-athlete signing parade Friday, Feb. 10, following Ashley Cockrell’s track signing a week earlier, to continue her career at Ashland University. Kaid Carpenter and Brady Lester both signed to continue their baseball careers at nearby Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Our Athletes of the Week are Grace Sipes (Fredericktown basketball) and Trenton Collins (Utica basketball).

Three local wrestlers won championships and two took home silver at the 2023 Freddie Invite wrestling tournament, Jan. 14.

The Mount Vernon News sports department’s MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK is a weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools. Based on their performances, we will select an ATHLETE of the WEEK and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments. Coming out of the holiday break, intensity was not a problem as several athletes showed no rust from the layoff. Two athletes who performed brilliantly in back to-back games include our Athletes of the Week, Ella Bouton (Fredericktown basketball) and Trenton Collins (Utica basketball).

Rivalry games bring out the best in teams, players and coaches and often come down to executing the fundamentals. Saturday’s Fredericktown vs.Centerburg girls basketball game lived up to the blueprint.

Last season, the Fredericktown Freddies boys basketball team went 6-6 in conference play and 12-13 overall last season, falling narrowly in a playoff matchup vs. the Utica Redskins. Heading into the 2022-2023 season, Fredericktown’s men’s basketball team is bringing back some of its top players, and looks like a dangerous team in the Knox Morrow Conference.

1972 Fredericktown High School graduate Curtis Reppart was that rare talent who excelled in the three most popular sports of the era: football, basketball, and baseball. Reppart played quarterback and defensive back on the football team, point guard on the basketball team, and shortstop the Freddie’s baseball squad.
