Lady Jackets complete Florida trip 5-0, with 9-3 win over Franklin on Harris slam

The Mount Vernon Lady Yellow Jackets hit three home runs and completed their spring break Florida softball trip with a 9-3 win over Franklin (Ohio) at the Beach Bash in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., on April 1.  

The Lady Jackets ended the week 5-0.

“The word of the week was 'growth,' and the Lady Jackets saw growth individually and as a team,” coach Ryan Penmtz said.

In the April 1 finale, Franklin hit the board first with three runs in the second, but that was all, as Mount Vernon clawed for one in the second, the put the game away with a seven-run outburst in the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth. The Lady Jackets outhit the Wildcats 13-8 and were led by Emma Calkins’ three hits. Kennedi Endsley, Rhyli Pope and Mac Schlosser each reached base with two hits as eight Lady Jackets smacked out hits. Kiannah Harris drove in four runs with a grand slam. Calkins, and Schlosser also hit home runs in the game. Emily Burke got the win with three strikeouts.

In the other games on the trip, the Lady Jackets defeated the Fort Walton Beach (Florida) Vikings 10-1 on March 31. Mount Vernon scored in bunches with two in the second, five in the fifth and three in the seventh before the Vikings got one in the seventh. Calkins homered, Endsley tripled and doubled and Rhyli Pope bashed two doubles among Mount Vernon’s 15 hits. Pope starred at the plate and in the circle, with three hits at bat and seven strikeouts and one run allowed in seven innings to get the win.

Other games reported on earlier in the Mount Vernon News, the Lady Jackets defeated Pikeville (Kentucky) 14-3, March 29, Johnson central (Kentucky) 13-6, March  28 and Raceland (Kentucky) 4-3 on March 27.

In the five games, Calkins had two homers and 10 hits, scored eight runs and drove in six. Harris and Endsley also had six RBIs, and Pope and Burke each earned two wins.

Mount Vernon returns home with a full slate of games this week.
