For any young basketball players looking to take their game to the next level this summer, the Kenyon Basketball Camp offetrs instruction, fundamentals, coaching and exposure.

Back for the first time since 2019, due to COVID-19 pandemic implications, the camp is open to second- through eighth-grade players of all genders who are rising in play levels and offers both top-notch coaching and a collaborative environment for improvement.

Dan Priest, the coach of Kenyon College’s men’s basketball team, will be running the camp along with his assistant coach, Andrew Kohler. Both have considerable experience as coaches and players. Priest has coached at Kenyon for 12 years and was the NCAC Coach of the Year in the 2012-2013 season. When he attended Ohio Northern University as a student-athlete, he helped lead the team to the 1988 NCAA tournament. Kohler has been on Kenyon’s staff since 2017 and was a four-year letter-winner at DeSales University.

A day at camp involves individual skill work as well as taking part in team competitions with three-on-three and five-on-five league play. The fun-but-competitive atmosphere is designed to help any young player looking to play high school hoops.

“It is a chance for kids from all levels of basketball to have fun and improve, (from) beginners and young kids to more advanced and older kids,” Priest said. The coach listed “learning fundamentals, how to be a good team player, friendships and a (free) T-shirt” as things that kids can take away from their camp experience.

Kenyon's basketball camp provides access to Kenyon’s facilities, including but not limited to the shooting gun, a tool that helps to teach shooting form and provides video analysis. Attendees will also get to make use of the Lowry Center, Kenyon’s athletic facility, which includes six full courts and air conditioning.

Camp will run from June 14-16, and the program each day will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lowry Center (221 Duff St. in Gambier). The overall cost for camp is $90. Campers can either bring a lunch from home or purchase pizza lunches provided by the camp for $6. Any questions about camp can be sent to Priest at 740-427-5556 or priestd@kenyon.edu.
