Tim Zeller, graduate of Mount Vernon High School, class of 2017, needed only the first week of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference baseball season to win Athlete of the Week honors in the league for his college, Ashland University (Ashland, Ohio).
Zeller started the season on fire and earned the honor following a big weekend at the plate and on the mound for the Eagles at the Frank Loria Invitational in Salem, W. Va. In four victories for his Eagles, Zeller hit .667 (12-for-18) and recorded five doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and 11 runs scored. He also brought home the relief victory against the host Tigers on Saturday (Feb. 26) night, striking out five and walking three in 2 2/3 hitless innings. Through March 1, Zeller was hitting .667, with an on-base percentage of .684. He owns a 1.278 slugging percentage and an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of an atmospheric 1.962.
Zeller was a member of the Yellow Jackets’ 2017 Ohio Capital Conference-winning team. He was named OCC Player of the Year and honorable mention All-Ohio. Zeller earned three varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball at Mount Vernon.
