Roundup: Sheriff, Carpenter lead No. 5 Freddies by Colts

Caleb Sheriff and Kaid Carpenter caught fire, combining for 46 points on the strength of nine 3-pointers to lead the fifth-ranked Fredericktown boys basketball team to a 67-51 victory over visiting Clear Fork in non-league action on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Sheriff hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points, and Carpenter added four from long range and 21 points to lead the Freddies (11-0), who opened the game 12-3 and led 31-14 at the half.

Clear Fork came storming back in the third quarter to pull within 37-34, but the Freddies answered in the fourth. Jared Scott led the Colts (3-6) with 24 points.

Heath 62, Utica 38

Visiting Heath used a 15-2 second quarter to take control and cruised to a 62-38 win over Utica in Licking County League play on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in Utica.

Keylan Williams keyed the second frame with eight of his team-best 16 points. Nick Lamar backed Williams with 14 points to lead the Bulldogs (5-1, 5-1).

Seth Cooper scored a game-high 18 points to lead Utica (3-7, 1-4).

Smithville 55, East Knox 39

Visiting Smithville made itself right at home with a 15-2 first quarter and cruised to a 55-39 win over East Knox in non-league action on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in Howard.

Carter Fath knocked down four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points and Colt Zollinger added 10 points to lead the Smithies (6-5), who built a 30-14 lead at the break.

Weston Melick scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs (5-5), who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Emilee Jordan and Lexi Wenger combined for 10 points in a 13-4 third quarter to lift host Northmor by East Knox 48-38 in KMAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, in Galion.

Jordan finished with 14 points and Wenger had 13 points to lead the Golden Knights (3-11, 2-8), who took the second half 29-15 to secure the win.

Laura Keith hit six 3-pointers and scored 18 points, and Shanda Melick added 11 points to lead the Bulldogs (4-8, 4-4). The duo combined for 16 points in the second quarter alone as East Knox built a 23-19 lead by halftime.

Mount Gilead 51, Centerburg 31

Candace Millisor scored six points as visiting Mount Gilead built a 15-6 lead after one quarter and rolled to a 51-31 win at Centerburg in KMAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Holly Gompf led MG (10-4, 6-4) with 12 points and Millisor finished with 11.

Chloe Goulter had 12 points to lead the Trojans (3-11, 2-7).

BOWLING

Blake French turned in another solid performance, rolling a 266 game and a 473 series, but his Utica team fell to Heath 1,964-1,813 in Licking County League play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Redskin Lanes in Utica.

Jordan Lacy rolled a 324 series to lead the Utica girls team, which was down a bowler and fell to Heath 2,118-1,196.

Golden Knights take two against Bulldogs

Zach Govoni rolled a 365 series to lead the visiting Northmor boys bowling team to a 1,949-1,410 win over East Knox in KMAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Will Jenson rolled a 384 series to lead the Bulldogs.

Kahlan Ball rolled a 328 series and Maddie Hoverland rolled a 326 series to lead the Knights to a 1,706-568 win over East Knox in girls bowling.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Maggie Coblentz came off the bench to score 25 points — one of five players in double figures for Mount Vernon Nazarene — in a 108-74 victory over Bethel in Crossroads League play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon.

Riley Pireu scored 19 points, Taylor Gregory had 17 points, Lily Krieger added 14 points and Maria Dobson pitched in 12 points for the Cougars (6-7, 3-3), who posted a 27-12 opening quarter and won every frame.

Kelsey Brickner led the Pilots (4-10, 0-7) with 22 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MVNU started fast, building a 14-point lead in the first four minutes. But host Bethel responded with a 22-4 run late in the first half to take the lead for good in a 99-82 win over the Cougars in Crossroads League action on Wednesday, Jan. 13, in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Jevon Knox scored 26 points and added four assists and three rebounds to lead the Cougars (3-5, 3-2).

TreVion Crews and Nathan Aerts went for 23 points apiece to lead the Pilots (13-3, 5-1), with Aerts pulling down 10 rebounds to post a double-double.
