The Mount Vernon News sports department’s MVN ATHLETE of the WEEK is a weekly feature that spotlights local student-athletes and their schools. Based on their performances, we will select an ATHLETE of the WEEK and recognize other outstanding athletic accomplishments. Coming out of the holiday break, intensity was not a problem as several athletes showed no rust from the layoff. Two athletes who performed brilliantly in back to-back games include our Athletes of the Week, Ella Bouton (Fredericktown basketball) and Trenton Collins (Utica basketball).

Utica girls turn out in big numbers to restore Redskins success

The Utica Redskins girls basketball team had an admittedly rough season in 2021-22, going 3-23 overall and 1-15 in Lucking County league play. The Lady Redskins’ high points last year came early, as they lost their last 18 games in a row. After losing to Fredericktown 53-34 to start the season, the Utica girls won back-to-back games, beating Northridge 51-34 and Fairfield Christian Academy 45-36 to go 2-1 in the year.

Utica 41, Indian Creek 20. The Utica Redskins faced Indian Creek Sept. 16 and the Redskins turned on the offense in a 41-20 win to improve to 2-3.

Danville 28, Fredericktown 7. Danville took on Fredericktown on Sept. 9, and Walker Weckesser had a strong day throwing the ball, leading the Danville squad to a 28-7 victory. Danville improved to 3-1 on the season and the Freddies fell to 2-2.

Utica wins Hux Invitational SC runThe Utica Redskins hosted the Hux Invitational Cross-Country run August 30 at 4H Camp Ohio in Utica and used the home-course advantage to take home the hardware.In the men’s 5000 meters, Utica won it all among six teams, with 39 points.
